Despite being one of the most wholesome couples on television, when Modern Family debuted Mitch and Cam were the one household on the show that wasn’t allowed to get married. Getting these guys to the altar was a multi-year effort, both on-screen and behind the scenes, on the part of the writers, the actors, and ultimately the US Supreme Court.

The funny thing was that Eric Stonestreet was not gay and according to Wikipedia is engaged to be married (since 2016 according to Wikipedia, I dont get long engagements, either be married or not but that is another argument).

Modern Family was on before the "woke" really went to the forefront. They would demand that Stonestreet would be replaced by a gay actor simply because he isn't gay. The two characters (to my knowledge and I stopped watching the series a couple of years earlier) never kissed, probably because Stonestreet is heterosexual.
