Those long sideburns, seemingly all the male actors wore on the show, were very distinctive. Firemen Gage, DeSoto, Kelly and Dr. Joe Early all sported long sideburns during the tv show’s six-year run. But, the most prominent set of sideburns was worn by actor Robert Fuller in the role of Dr. Kelly Brackett. His sideburns were extremely extra-long, to say the he least.
I wonder if Mr. Fuller ever looks at an episode of “Emergency” and says to himself, “Jesus, I should have trimmed those ugly-@ss sideburns back during the 1970s!”?
PS I happened to see a first-year episode of the show the other day. All of the firemen have short haircuts and no sideburns, even the later bushy-haired Chet Kelly. They all looked much better without all of that facial hair.
As to the overly hirsute Fireman Kelly, with that long hair, long sideburns and bushy moustache of his, old Chet later looked like the identical twin brother of the late comedian/actor Avery Schreiber .
Even Dr. Kelly Brackett, with long sideburns and thick, black hair over the tops of his ears in the early episodes, he wasn’t as nearly scruffy-looking as the good doctor looked during the later years of
“Emergency.”
