Having a kid and then just taking your own name and tacking junior on to it. Heartwarming family tradition, or narcissistic ego trip?

Or just basic laziness.

Better than giving the boy a middle name of "Rosebud".

In the south it's a family tradition although it's never happened on either side of my family that I can recall.

Here's one, how many famous Juniors overshadowed the success of their father?

2 that quickly come to mind are Ken Griffey Jr. and Cal Ripken Jr.

If Annie had been a boy would she have been named Max Horvath Jr. ?? :D:wave:

Nice. It was actually sports people, including those two and various people I saw playing college football yesterday, that inspired this post.

Did you ever notice it’s always on the male side? You never see a Valerie Bertinelli, Jr.

I don't see it as an ego thing, I like the name Ann, my mom is Ann, my middle name is Ann, and my grandgirl is Anna, I like it and it continues.

My mil liked Jennifer Jones and so my ex and I named our daughter Jenifer to please mil I guess....but we spelled it differently and middle name is Jeanne after an aunt on her dad's side. It's nice to honor a person with carrying on the name.

There are a lot of Valerie's out there and I see Bertinelli's middle name is Anne.

Wonder if Valerie named their son after Puck????

George Foreman has 5 sons named George, as well as a daughter named Georgetta.

There are also two brothers in professional baseball named Wilmer Flores, who also have a 3rd brother named Wilmer...each having a different middle name. I guess customs vary?

Talk about ego, george foreman's is huge, and george is one of my least fav names period.

Also John C. Depp II a.k.a. "Johnny" Depp although he's a II, not a junior, still the same exact name as his dad.

I'd vote for all three choices, but I'd leave the heartwarming part out.

Not a junior, but my sister is named after our mother.

It *is* rare though; it's usually on the male side.

Yes this is true, but it seems a member here has a problem with heartwarming....

As I said above my middle name is the same as my mom's first name...if they planned it that way or it happened that way, it's the way it is.

Well there could be ! Valery or Valeri ? Is a Male's name in Russia!

So if one of Valerie's Brothers named a Son Valery , and than HE named a Son Valery , he would be Valery Bertinelli Jr. !!! :D:cool:

JD is technically a junior? I didn’t know that. Yes, sometimes people are the second (II) the third (III), the fourth (IV), and so on. That always sounded like movie sequels to me. Or Popes.

My uncle was named after my late grandfather, who in turn, was named after his father.

I'm personally not a fan of the tradition, and I don't think there's anything heartwarming about it. While I don't mind having my father's first name as my middle name, I'm glad I wasn't named a junior.

It is not something I would do. However, there have been some successful juniors compared to their namesakes. You never hear about Sammy Davis, Sr. or Robert Downey, Sr.

Robert Downey Sr. is somewhat well known, especially to movie buffs

Sammy’s dad I don’t know. Maybe he’s kissing Archie Bunker’s dad.

Director Paul Thomas Anderson definitely knows who Downey Sr is, which is why he put Downey Sr. in a few of his movies

My ex would have named our kid after him, but his name was Karl. We just were not mean enough to name him Karl Junior. Too much like the burger joint.
