View Full Version : Did the witches know how to do simply life activities on their own?
TheLittleFaerie 08-31-2022, 09:20 AM When Endora lost her powers, she looked more disheveled than usual. So it made me wonder, do you think the witches knew how to do simple activities of daily living, since they use witchcraft for pretty much everything. Did they know how to dress themselves, take a bath, brush their teeth, etc.... I'm guessing they always use witchcraft to do all that stuff
Willbo 08-31-2022, 09:32 AM Endora was pretty helpless without her powers. She could not even lift the coffee pot. They must have done simple, normal everyday things. However, I think they used their powers most of the time. Samantha did seem to know how to do a lot of things in the early episodes.
GentlemanJim 08-31-2022, 12:29 PM I believe that in order to accomplish any specific task via witchcraft, the witch would have to first understand the goal as well as the method to get there.
EG I don't see witchcraft as an "autopilot". In order to cast a spell to tie ones shoes, for example, you would have to understand how it is accomplished.
Now, as far as being willing to "lower themselves" to the rank of commoner, and risk obtaining callouses like all the other "knuckle draggers"....that is a separate matter.
Case in point, Aunt Agatha was a screwvball, and her spells were always going awry...so I doubt there was a spirit in the sky handling the magic on behalf of the operator (correction: aunt Clara)
stevea 08-31-2022, 02:05 PM If an item was across the room on a table, and the witch or warlock wanted it where they were seated, that's magic that would go back to their wishcraft days.
But for something like tying a shoe, the spell for that would probably be taught by their mother or father. Probably another spell for using a back brush in the shower, etc.
GentlemanJim 09-01-2022, 12:11 AM Witch do you suspect would have the steeper learning curve? For a young warlock to figure out how to do this

Or for a young witch to figure out how to walk on an air vent in spikes without getting marooned?
GentlemanJim 09-01-2022, 02:59 PM One additional consideration regarding the "power" of witchcraft. I doubt that Endorra manually applied her make up, so if she cast a spell "make me beautiful" well .....the power was obviously limited.
Funny she could turn Darrin into a toad, but could do nothing to escape looking like Seahag, herself?
tcr1701 09-01-2022, 03:04 PM Samantha once said "Vanity, thy name is mortal." Witches didn't seem to be obsessed with beauty standards and may not have even appeared human in their natural state (as somewhat hinted at by Endora early on). But Agnes Moorhead I thought looked grand and regal at her age.
GentlemanJim 09-01-2022, 05:15 PM LMAO!! You're saying that Endora was not VAIN?

Any woman who wears that much eye shadow couldn't possibly be...
GentlemanJim 09-01-2022, 07:28 PM Regarding vanity being a "mortal" thing....Uncle Arthur and Dr Bombay both, are NOTHING, if they are not vain.

Most of the witches aside from Samantha and Aunt Clara were very vein.... For a simple breakfast they would request something that would cost around 70$ in a fancy restaurant lol

I dunno if the witches were limited or not when it comes to looks and aging.... For that matter could Endora have cast a spell to keep her looking 25 forever? Could witches cast as spell to prevent eventual death and live forever? I've often wondered. I wondered also if Samantha could have extended Darrin's lifespan to match hers at least. I know Endora turned herself into a little girl once, but I was thinking she may not could have stayed like that permanently.

Within the lore of the show it appears that as they age they lose power and ability to maintain most spells (i.e. Aunt Clara). Even Samantha turned Aunt Clara 10 years younger, but it only lasted a few minutes. Maybe old witches never die, they just fade away.

Like Esmeralda, only her fades were temporary. It cracked me up when you'd just see a pair of glasses floating there.

Didn't Endora make Darrin super-old in one episode? (meaning she could manipulate looks age-wise)
GentlemanJim 09-02-2022, 05:29 PM I thought that Agnes Moorhead was attractive in that Twilight zone episode where she was a giant (in a "the peasant next door" sort of way) woman
,
But on Bewitched,....the combination of that strident personality, and all that make up, just made me extremely aware of her flaws in appearance

yes and she also turned him into a little boy and turned herself into a little girl, but I was wondering if that would have been permanent. It seems if the witches could manipulate age, they some at least would have zapped themselves at a prime age. I've wondered if the witches could have just zapped Aunt Clara to be a younger age and restored her powers to her
Babalu 09-03-2022, 12:07 PM I think as usual, everyone is looking too deep into a lighthearted fictional TV show. There's no logic to this. It's made up stuff.

He he he.
I think if Endora applied her makeup by witchcraft, she'd need another witch's help. Too much heavy lifting for one.
