Most likely for the reason you mentioned, because he had previously done "The Partridge Family" and he was identified with THAT series, and they were kind of "rival" shows. His appearance on the Partridge show resulted in his own spin-off series "Getting Together" in 1971-72. Plus he had previously had a series called "Here Come the Brides".

Probably another reason: He just wasn't asked or wanted to be on the show.
