View Full Version : Favorite Here's Lucy episode?
CHUCK T 08-10-2002, 11:32 AM Hands down it would have to be the episode guest starring Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton (and of course the famous diamond ring). It was as good as anything on ILL. Of course, that episode was written by the team that did so many of the classic ILL's. I especially love the scene where Lucy is hidden behind the curtain with only her arm extended out wearing the ring which got stuck to her finger--pretending that it is Elizabeth Taylor's arm and hand. This was a bit that had been recycled from ILL (the episode where Lucy and Ricky are handcuffed together--but it works even better in this Here's Lucy episode).
As a side bar, Richard Burton couldn't stand Lucy. I read a book which quoted his diary about the whole "Here's Lucy" experience. For one thing he found Lucy demanding. He felt it wasn't her role to tell him how to perform a scene. She kept telling him to project--and yell his lines like everyone else did on that show. He was contemptuous of someone spending "19 straight years doing silly pratfalls every week!!" he did praise Gale Gordon however, but couldn't understand how Gale could withstand week and week of working with Lucy.
Richard and Lucy never came to blows but years later when his diary was published (Burton was already dead) Lucy was surprised to find out that he "loathed" her.
LucyFan 08-19-2002, 08:11 PM I have a lot of favorite Here's Lucy episodes but I will name a couple of them:
~ "Lucy Carter Meets Lucille Ball", episode #141. This has got to be THE greatest Here's Lucy episode ever because of the fact that Lucille Ball is a guest star on her own show. The plot of the episode is extremely good and the acting is supurb. This episode even features Lucy's second husband, Gary Morton, playing himself. I call this a DON'T MISS EPISODE.
~ "Lucy Protects Her Job", episode #40. This one is a classic. It is one of the finest episodes done entirely by Lucie Arnaz. She does extremely well at playing "Shoiley Shopenhower" the dumb secretary (which is really Kim Carter who is acting out the role) hired by Lucy Carter. This episode is one of the best of the entire series.
~ "Lucy and the Used Car Dealer", episode #33. YES, this is it the one that featured our Uncle Milti - - Milton Berle playing the used car dealer. The whole plot of this episode is well-written and the chemistry between the characters is at its best.
SPLAIN 09-23-2002, 01:49 PM Old shows, you told that story well, except that i dun't think he hated her, he just was not used to someone standing up to him like that. He wasn't yelling his lines and wasn't getting the laughs, so Lucy being a pro wasn't going to let that go on. She told the pompous ass, and his egotistical bride also. Did you see the interview with Rosie O'donnell where Liz got a chance to vent on Lucy?

No, what did Liz say? As for Burton, I seem to recall that he did use the word "loath" in his book when he was talking about Lucy. And yes, Lucy did make people yell on the set of that show. Whenever I watch HL, I have to turn down the volume.
SPLAIN 10-07-2002, 11:04 AM That is so funny Jane, you saying you turned down the volume on Here's Lucy episodes. By the way, did you get my PM, and did you answer, i don't see PM's here on this site. But i'm like Lucy Carter with computer things! You are correct, Dickie boy said he loathed her because of the I LOVE Lucy thing, but like i said, these two were used to the smoke up their you know whats, they could not tolerate somebody treating them as less than Royals. Liz was asked by Rosie what it had been like working with Lucy. She restrained herself at first, then added that, how would you like to be told go here, move there and pushed and so on. When Rosie said Lucy could be a little bossy, the gloves were off. Liz was smart enough to mention that Lucy was an icon and she had to tone down what she wanted to say. When i look at Liz today, looking like she's 80, and needs help walking, and friends with the wack job M Jackson, i really dun't care what she thinks. But it explains the look that would glaze over her whenever those clips of the Burtons and Lucy were shown on specials.

I never noticed Liz had a look that would glaze over her when clips of the Burtons and Lucy were shown on specials, but then again, I've never seen those clips shown in Liz's presence. But I do remember several years ago Liz made a guest appearance on The Nanny, and there was a reference made by Fran to that HL episode. Liz obviously didn't object to that. When you say that "the gloves were off" when Rosie said Lucy could be bossy, what do you mean? What else did Liz say?
It's funny how Liz seems to be given so much respect these days, I have to wonder why. A few decades ago, she was famous mostly for being a slut. Now she gets standing ovations. Standing ovations for what? For being an old slut? Oh no, I guess it's because SHE'S a SURVIVOR. I get so sick of hearing "Liz is a survivor" all the time. In fact, I get sick to death of that phrase being used for ANYONE. It's way over used. Hell, any person who is alive is a survivor. So we're all survivors! Yeah, yeah, I know Liz Taylor has had some rough times in her life healthwise, but who the hell hasn't had health problems that's been around as long as she has? Big deal. Besides, some of her health problems were brought on herself with her boozing and partying. So she's survived her own self-inflicted abuse. And she's survived screwing other people's husbands and cheating on her own husbands. And she's survived some health scares, like millions of other people. But unlike most of those millions of other people who have survived health scares, she's filthy rich! She can afford the best doctors on the planet.

8. Lucy's Candid Camera
Are you serious about that? That Candid Camera episode is in your top ten? I absolutely HATE that one. Ugh! I love Candid Camera, but that episode does that classic series a huge disservice.
SPLAIN 10-21-2002, 10:45 AM Ok, as usual, i was flying all over the place with my comments so i'll try again Jane. Liz was on Rosie and Rosie asked her about working with Lucy, she hemmed and awed and tried not to answer, then she mentionned Lucy was an American icon, and tried to keep quiet, Rosie pushed and finally Lizzie said how would you like somebody pushing you around saying go here do that, and Rosie said yeah Lucy could be a little bossy, to which Liz replied A LITTLE BOSSY? And again tried to control her outburst. Fran Dreisher is a Lucy fan and she had a script for her, which she did for the exposure as she is fading fast and i agree with you, she got one Oscar for sympathy for all her health woes, and got one she deserved, she's a perfect example of a beauty being rabaged by time, as Lucy was too, all actresses as they get older go through this. At the American Film Institute award dinner for her, the clip was shown by Carol Burnett and all Liz could muster was a polite little smile, she is after all an actress, but bot that good, so you could tell it was forced. Yes, she gets the standing ovations as she is what now 70, and sometimes looks older, she's surmounted many many health problems and is worth hundreds of millions with her perfume line and jewels, the one good thing i will say for her is that she contributes to Aids charities by lending her name and some time to the cause, but in my mind, just being so friendly with Michael Jackson, the pedophile weirdo tells me the type of person she really is, when they called her names when i was younger, i used to defend her, no more! In this case, i think that word you so often use, applies!

I like that episode purely for the brilliant musical bank robbery sequence. :)
Trina 04-17-2003, 12:23 PM The episode with Donny Osmond is my favorite!! This is the only one that I have on video too.
SPLAIN 04-17-2003, 03:39 PM Well, i already had most of the Burton one, and a couple of others, but someone just sent me a dozen perfect copies of classic ones, all the ones with Viv visiting and some musical ones like the Hawaiian trip and the Mexico trip and they are all great to see after so many years, i especially liked the one where Lucy meets Lucille Ball, and i must say even though i've never been big on musical numbers, all of these were great, Ginger Rogers and others lending their talents to the shows, i m ight not have thought they were the best when i was younger watching them for the first time, but i agree they are classics now!
BundyBoy10 04-25-2003, 09:12 AM Any episode in seasons 1-3 are good. I am dying to see Lucy meets Lucille Ball. I've never seen that episode. :(
Novarro 06-10-2003, 02:34 AM Absolutely the legendary episode "Lucy Meets The Burtons". Wow getting super stars Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton on a tv series back then, what a coup!! Also a hilarious scrpt based on the famous"The Handcuffs" Episode from "I Love Lucy".
Simon
SPLAIN 06-10-2003, 10:02 AM Yes, that particular episode should have been an hour, and it got her her best rating of the whole series too, i think it was number two for the week, but CBS was too cheap to go for an hour show. The kaftan alone that Liz wore was 10 thousand dollars and she needed another one as a spare. I agree with you, getting them on the show was quite a coup. Lucy and Gary saw them at a party and Richie yelled out why haven't we ever done your show? Lucy was shocked that they would want to appear on HER show, but they had kids who LOVED her, so it happenned when Gary got the writers to write a script very fast to suit their schedules, and it was well worth it, one of the best shows she ever did, and the best of this series.
Novarro 06-10-2003, 07:02 PM Splain,
Totally agree with you!! It's a priceless episode and Lucy's highest rating episode in her entire television career apart from The birth of little Ricky on "I Love Lucy" in "Lucy Goes To the Hospital".
I thought Elizabeth Taylor was great in the episode and really showed her comic skills that aren't normally known. The Burton's were great sports to basically send up their own super star images in the episode . I just wish it was released on video or DVD.
Simon
Yes, and it was definitely NOT number #2 for the week, it was most definitely #1 and number #3 overall for the season, with only Marcus Welby and Flip Wilson beating it. As for favorite episodes, I really haven't seen too many. I only have a few on tape, most of which are unwatchable due to tracking, etc...I do have "Lucy the Fixer" recorded in pristine SP mode. I cherish it! I do have a few others on tape though...
"Lucy the Matchmaker"
"The Bow-Wow Boutique"
"Lucy the Fixer"
"Lucy and Eva Gabor"
"Lucy and the Bogie Affair"
These aren't necessarily my favorites, just the ones that I have on tape and enjoyed. My favorite of the above eps are probably, "Matchmaker", "Fixer" and "Eva Gabor"...I wish they'd run this show again!!
SPLAIN 06-11-2003, 03:37 PM Sorry BB, but i got that rating from a book that said Gary showed the number two rating to Lucy and she thought it was a joke, they were both so pleased, it makes sense that it would be number one, and i would LOVE nothing more than to be wrong on that point, but i did get it from a book, and they do make mistakes now and then. Yes, even Richard thought Lizzie did a great job in comedy so he suggested they tour in a comedy play right after they did this show, and Liz was not happy with the size of her part on the show, she had asked for a small part, but didn't realize how small it would be in the end. She was going to be operated for Hemmorroyds sp? the following Monday and was not a happy camper on the set!
Novarro 06-11-2003, 07:06 PM As I stated earlier the part I loved the most apart from Liz threatening to cut Lucy's finger off to get her ring back was the wonderful way the Burtons sent up their own lavish image. in particular the line were Liz says she could use Champagne as a lubricant to get the ring off. Hilarious meshing of comedy with their own lavish lifestyle image!!
Simon
Splain, how could it have been only #2?? The episode had millions upon millions of viewers, and was one of, if not the biggest rating Lucy ever got in her career. The episode even made the history ratings books. If it was in fact only #2, then what was the show that beat it because that must have made history as well...what book did you read that from? I have literally every Lucy book published and several do mention it being #1...
SPLAIN 06-12-2003, 09:52 AM HEY, i told you i saw that one time, and i could not be happier to be wrong, if you think i'm going to reread all my books to find it, you're bonkers. I am thrilled it was number one, of course with them on her show, how could it not be? I always assumed Laugh In had been number one that week with superstars of their own, they started at 8, she had to follow Gunsmoke which ran from 7:30 to 8:30, so they actually left Laugh in at the half way point to catch Lucy, that's just great. I know it makes no sense that it be number two as everybody says it was her best rating since the baby's birth on I love Lucy. So you win, and i am happy to be wrong, but i'm too lazy to read the books to find the quote, but one day i will come across it and we can scratch that author's eyes out for screwing up such an important fact, ok? LOL!
Josh9125 08-24-2003, 11:49 AM My favorite is "Lucy & Eva Gabor". Seeing Lucy & Eva on screen together is so priceless.
Yeah, that ep was cute. The way Eva kept calling Lucy (not sure how to type it but it's pronounced Loo-sull) LOL! Also, Shirley Mitchell was in a scene briefly as well...
Interestingly, The Lucy Book says Eva's character's name is Eva Von Kristen, yet in the episode they pronounce it Von Gronyatz or something...
NCVARick 08-25-2003, 02:39 AM "Lucy Meets the Burtons" aired during CBS's season premiere week for the 1970-71 season, the week when most series were returning for the new season, or making their debuts ("The Mary Tyler Moore Show" debuted later that week). And this episode was indeed the number one rated episode that week. I don't know what book you were reading that said it was number two, but I'm pretty sure that's wrong. I've long heard it was Lucy's highest rating since "Lucy Goes to the Hospital." Heck, the series wound up in third place for the entire season (and CBS's number one series in '70-'71; in first place was ABC's Marcus Welby, MD and #2 was NBC's "The Flip Wilson Show") I'm sure the strength of this episode helped elevate "Here's Lucy" to the #3 position overall that season. The 1970-71 was the first (and last) time a "Lucy" series was CBS's top program since "I Love Lucy" held that distinction back in 1956-57.

SPLAIN 08-26-2003, 01:06 PM Well, even the story makes more sense now. It said Gary walked in with the Neilsen ratings and showed Lucy and she was incredulous, number two, wow, what a coup, and especially against Laugh In which was giving her a hard time in the ratings. I was depressed for many years after reading that, that even landing the Burtons could'nt put her back at number one, so i am thrilled to be wrong, you know guys, there are lots of mistakes in books, the current Ball of Fire has some also. Viv did not win two Emmy awards, she got only one, and i found other obvious ones also, these errors get repeated all the time, i am very happy you caught that one.
LOL! I knew it couldn't have been #2 since it was Lucy's second highest rated episode ever. There is alot of false info in books, but even I wouldn't have believed that...
gillisgrant 08-27-2003, 01:23 AM I love, love, LOVE the Burtons episode! It is quite simply, a Lucy classic. However, the one episode I love slightly more, is the episode with Lawrence Welk. Not only do you have Lucy in fine form, but you also have Vivian Vance, Lucie and Desi, Jr. as well as Mary Jane. There are some hilarous lines in this episode, and seeing Lucy and Viv together is great. The only missing aspect is Gale Gordon...he's not in the episode for some reason. Still, a classic in my book!
SPLAIN 08-27-2003, 09:59 AM I agree, i will never forget the happy look on Lucy's face when she danced with Welk, quite a coup for persons of a certain age! And BB25, i live in Montreal Canada, not in New York City or Los Angeles, so if i can't easily get a copy of Variety, or at least at THAT time, i can get the wrong info, these days everything can be found very easily, you don't even need the papers or magazines, just the NET!
I am dying to see "Lucy and Lawrence Welk" along with all the other Viv guest star episodes. So far, I have only seen "Lucy the Matchmaker", and supposedly it's one of the weaker Viv eps. Can you give some examples of the "hilarious lines" in this show? There is a well told tale about this ep that Lucy wanted to cut many of Viv's funny lines, but Viv stood her ground and Lucy restored them. Oh, if only Viv could have been a regular on this show as well, it just could have been so much better!
SPLAIN 08-28-2003, 01:54 PM Better still BB, get in line for a tape from me and i will include all of Viv's guest appearances if you want, just PM me your home address, i still have 6 people ahead of you though, so allow three weeks or so for mailing.
Wha?? Thanks for your offer, but I don't get what you mean...email me or give me your email and we'll talk...
SPLAIN 08-29-2003, 01:58 PM I'm saying that i could make you a tape of Lucy stuff and include those eps on it, for free.
Wow, really?? I'd really appreciate it! Just drop me an email and I'll reply my home address back to you...

I think this is one of those instances where you have to see the episode to find the humor in the lines. It's not that the lines themselves are all that funny, but the way they are said, the looks on the actors' faces when they are spoken, the inflections in their voices. My favorite line from this episode is when Lucy says, "Okay, who are you?" Not at all funny when you read it here, but you see Lucy say it in the episode, it's hilarious. Kind of like when Lucy says in "Never Do Business With Friends" (on "I Love Lucy") "Look what happened to your washing machine!" That line isn't funny when you read it, but when you watch her say it in that episode, it's hysterical.
I know exactly what you mean! You really have to see these kinds of things to fully appreciate them...
This is also sort of the case in the 1967 "Lucy Meets the Law" episode of TLS. I watched the episode all the way through last night and if you pay close attention to the lines, the faces, and everything going on, it is easily one of the funniest episodes of that series. The scene where they're in the jail cell (the Matron is hysterical!), is brilliant, and again when Mr. Mooney comes to save Lucy at the end and says "...yes, we'll have no trouble with this case if we plead insanity". That line could almost seen distasteful on paper, but the way Gale said it and Lucy's delayed bursting into tears, it is absolutely hilarious!
You really have to see the ep to appreciate it. I know if someone ran through the lines of "Meets the Law" to me on paper, I probably wouldn't even crack a smile. Brilliant acting.
SPLAIN 09-22-2003, 10:45 AM Did you send me your address for your tape BB? And did you ever tell me what else you wanted on there besides the Viv eps?
No, I'm sorry I haven't. I just haven't had much time to research which eps I want lately, but I'll be sure to email you about it by the end of this week!
Thanks again!
Just to let you know, the majority of other eps I want will be from the 1st season of TLS...
SPLAIN 09-23-2003, 09:57 AM Well, don't go nuts now, you already have me making six of the Viv appearances on here's Lucy, it's only a six hour tape, LOL!
NCVARick 09-27-2003, 11:53 AM I'm not much of a fan of most of the post-Viv episodes of TLS, but "Lucy Meets the Law" is a standout episode. Truly hilarious. "What's new, pussycat?" :)

SPLAIN 09-29-2003, 10:56 AM I'm the one who's been saying that he loved the last three seasons without Viv, but it's mostly from memory, i only have two thirds of the eps and the ones i'm missing are from that period, so maybe i'll eat my words one day. My fave is the Dean Martin one!
SPLAIN 09-29-2003, 10:58 AM Sorry, just realized this is supposed to be about Here's Lucy, so lemme say, i have two thirds of this series also and some of them are real gems. Let's face it, Lucy WAS the show like Desi and others always said, i know i tuned in to see HER, although the supporting players and great writing helped.
I don't have TOO many other eps I want, but it was actually you SPLAIN who originally asked me if I wanted more than the Viv eps! "it's a 6 hour tape!" you said!
Anyway, I'll be emailing you very soon...
Another memorable line NCVA is:
Matron: Well, you're as welcome as the flowers in May!
SPLAIN 10-02-2003, 01:08 PM Yes BB i KNOW that, but some people forget and they ask for five movies on a six hour tape, you know? With Lucy's earlier work and those terrible B movies that run 60 to 80 minutes, fine, but her later work was normal length.
Yes, I know. In fact, I've figured that you can fit an average of 16 half-hour eps without commericals on a 6 hour tape, but still there's not TOO many more that I want so don't worry :D
SPLAIN 10-10-2003, 09:41 AM I don't know where you learned math but they are usually 25 minutes or so and multiplied by 16 is 400 minutes, and the tape is only 360 minute with a little extra sometimes like 5 to ten minutes. I figure maybe 14!;)
Nope! 12 if you include commericials, and 16 if you don't. The episodes themselves are not 25 minutes either, they are 21-22 minutes in length. Trust me, I do alot of taping, and know this well by now, and it doesn't involve math, so you needn't insult my math skills...;)
You even have a few extra minutes left on the tape with 16!
If you're arguing this to try and get out of making me the tape, just let me know! Just also remember that I DID offer to pay whoever makes me the tape, so...
SPLAIN 10-12-2003, 08:50 PM Yeah, well, maybe you should do that. I am paying for the blank tapes and the postage and spending hours making the copies, so when someone is nice enough to say, make me a tape, fine, but when i'll have to search to find all the specific ones you requested, and sit there and edit all the commercials to fit more on a tape, that's a bit much. My offer stands though for a tape, with all the Viv Here's Lucy appearances, those i have more or less together and i would gladly try and find other Here's Lucy you would like, but because i am not being paid for these i don't want it to be a chore, do you understand? I wasn't insulting your math skills, i was venting, i've had only one other person who drove me nuts changing her request repeatedly and making my offer a job and then she dissapeared from the boards, so that's why i was angry at your request, i'm sorry. I pay an average of 30 bucks a week to keep Lucy's legacy alive and i've always liked your posts so i offered to make that tape for you, but i forgot the people on this board can be a little rough sometimes, me included, sorry again.
Look, I don't want to fight. All I know is that I was looking for someone to copy the Viv episodes for me for months on here, and you finally came through and offered to do it for free, which I still appreciate. However, you are the one that offered to do more episodes, and I don't appreciate you trying to make me feel as if it's putting you out, or as if I'm mooching them off of you or something, because I'm certainly not that kind of person. I am simply a fan of Lucy, and want to enjoy more of her work than just I Love Lucy. So, if you're offer still stands for doing the Viv eps and a few more for free, great, but if you're wanting me to now pay because I requested more than you bargained for, I'd have to think about it...how much are you talking? I really don't have alot of extra money right now...
Once again, sorry for driving you nuts or putting you out or whatever, I wasn't trying to do either...I'm also sorry if I asked for too many extra episodes, but I mean I only asked for like one per season, if that - which is hardly extravagant...anyway, just email me about this - you should have gotten one from me a few days ago...
SPLAIN 10-14-2003, 10:17 AM Ok, let's talk, i'm not angry anymore, had a three day weekend to rest. I started offering tapes to people i like who are REAL Lucy fans and the reason i was doing it was because i have some rare OLD stuff of hers taped twenty years ago and i wanted the best fans to get copies before they wear out. So, after a while of doing that, MY COPIES are starting to show some wear, which bothers me. I saw you wanted those Viv eps and the guy that gave me those put the Viv ones together, more or less, so i didn't mind doing those. Then, i asked you what else you wanted on there, thinking i would put on my old priceless stuff for the remaining three hours or so, but instead you got specific about which eps you wanted and would get back to me. Please understand that i would NEVER charge a fellow Lucy Fan for anything of Lucy's, never have, never will. I am 15 people behind now with tapes and have less and less time to do them because i can't resist offering the people i like more and more tapes. Leos never know when to stop. I apologize for the misunderstanding, totally my fault, you're right, i'm the one that said WHAT ELSE WOULD YOU LIKE? Not thinking that you would ask for 16 eps without commercials that i will have to go through seven tapes trying to find each one. Lemme check how difficult it would be to put the ones you asked for on a tape. You surely understand that if someone says, give me three Lucy movies, you put one on, go to work, come back at lunchtime and put the second one on, then when you get home you put the third on and you're done, that i like. Going through seven tapes trying to find the ones you want and edit commercials and try and fit everything on ONE tape, that's a different story. But i will gladly put the first ones you asked for on there and check to see what i can do abbout the others. You see, i only have two thirds of The Lucy show and two thirds of here's Lucy myself and am trying to get the rest the same as you. However, when someone wants copies of the specials or news the day Lucy died or tributes or Lucy at the TV Hall of Fame or Oscars, then, that's mroe my specialty, sorry about being so difficult myself, we Leos are not picnic to deal with.
Not to trump this back up, but again, you are trying to make this sound like a huge hassle to you. I never specifically asked for the episodes to be done without commercials - I only said that to be considerate of the money you have to spend on tapes. If you want to do them with commercials to save time, and have more than 1 tape, then who am I to tell you no? It's just up to you and what you have time for. Again, I appologize for this whole ordeal. I just want the Viv episodes and whatever else I asked for, that you have time for. Period. Don't get the impression that I'm walking all over you...I'm really not :( :)
SPLAIN 10-24-2003, 10:21 AM Of course you're not, i'm the one that's going through h*** because in the past week i was contacted by Paul Brownstein Productions who very politely and nicely asked me to stop making copies of Here's lucy, that's why you haven't heard from me since. They want to protect their investment, i understand that, they are FINALLY bringing out 24 eps of the show on DVD in the spring and want to make sure nobody is duplicating them which i fully undertsand. I was just trying to get material that is NOT available to Lucy's biggest fans and Mr Brownstein even acknowledged that fact in his PM to me, whihc i thought was very considerate under the circumstances. He will also soon have The Lucy specials which is also great news for all of us Lucy fans! All i want is for all of us fans to have access to all her great material, not just the one or two TV series. She had 76 movies, over 500 tv shows and dozens of specials and guest shots and talk shows and game shows and documentaries and so much more than the one tv series everybody knows by heart!
OK....so you're saying you can't make the tape for me at all then??? There's no way this guy could ever totally stop people from buying and trading anyway, just so they have to get the expensive DVDs...:o
