I guess they feel that the blunt approach will gain eyeshare? And, I'll admit the first time I saw it, it grabbed my attention. But the shelf life is no so good. Once you've seen a few repetitions, it grows painfully familiar.

I guess a different standard of decency applies to cable advertisements vs over-the-air?

I just don't see any company such as the big soaps (P&G... Unilever... etc), stooping to such a level

That horrible commercial repulsed me the first time I saw it and now it's annoying and still gross.

An irritating commercial are those dumb Peloton commercials with that horrible rap music blasting in the background. I pick that as the second most annoying commercial. Lume is #1.

I think the streamers deliberately accept the most repulsive ads to get you to pay for the "ad free" option.

GentlemanJim

It's a potential minefield issue. On the one hand, it's probably a good thing to have more people made conscious of potential human "flaws". Experience certainly reveals that not all parents adequately brief their children on the subject. SO, if the information didn't come through television, some people would likely never get the message.

But, I feel this particular (Lume) commercial is excessively frank.

I use the following product for pretty much the same (exclusive) purpose, the name krakengarde just seemed to resonate with me in a "fit for the intended purpose" sort of way.

Seems to work, too

Is that commercial really on TV?

Yes.....after I first posted this, I was uncertain which channel I had seen it on. But last night saw it on one of our local Diginet channels......Cozi late time slot.

I'm pretty sure it's been on the cable channels too.

GentlemanJim

Thing of it is, I don't consider myself an intolerant person, and I'm certainly not a "prude".

I believe the Lume and the Aids prophylactic medication commercials are misplaced. Even so...an occasional showing would not aggravate me. But, when these two, coupled with the "bent carrot", "pinching off a porcupine", ED, and a few others go into heavy rotation.....they start to create sort of a wallpaper, that I find annoying.

I understand that repetition is key in advertising, but seeing that gal lament about her sweaty cheeks 5+ times per hour really starts to ruin the programming they are sponsoring, IMO.

She's like the neighbor who I never want to answer the door, once I realize it's her knocking

JFYI, the Lume commercial was on AMC several times last night.

I'm starting to suspect that offending their customers is key to their marketing strategy. Assuring the commercial is remembered. Lucky for them, I guess,... that the problem they claim to solve is even more offensive than the advertisements

"Oh, I don't want to be a sweathog, I'd better buy Lume" etc.

Your "nutritional awareness" threads could be considered "spam" by the forum members who just wish you would stop.

And I'm like "Oh soooo sorry, let me just go thrust myself on my own sword so YOU can define the playing field"...

I hate that one for the cheap informercial makeup. It's on now, muted of course.

I often wonder where is the value to advertisers, for infomercials, to begin with? Especially in the late late over night time slots. I'm sure the time is cheap...but who watches?

Best I can suspect is, they believe there are people who fell asleep watching earlier programming, who are still susceptible to what they hear despite being asleep? ( a variant of 'subliminal seduction' is what I believe they call it?)

I know whenever I see those listings in the program guide, there is just zero desire to even go peek....totally avoid it.

Just because I want no one to think I was watching an infomercial, it was an infomercial-style ad on an Antenna TV show.

The only infomercials I've seen are some of those old Ron Popeil "set it and forget it" oven ads, and some of the Time-Life music ones in the past.

Another thing about infomercials--any worthwhile product would be sold in a store, IMO. Who would buy Lume from an 800 number?

I love watching them too. Also the Dean Martin roast infomercial.

I sometimes watch the cooking ware infomercials for portable ovens or pots and pans. I'd never buy any of them though. They're all pretty much junk. I used to love the Ron Popeil pasta maker infomercial. Part of the fun is watching how they lie their way through it and the paid audience reaction.

Yeah years ago one of my sister-in-laws bought a food dehydrator Ron Popeil was selling in one of his infomercials. She'd mostly use it to make dehydrated fruit snacks for their kids and it really did work quite well. And the fruit snacks did turn out pretty tasty.

Normally I dislike all the TV imagery that tries to simulate a smart phone's video aperture (the fuzzy side panels on either side of the image - thing). Such was the original Lume commercial.

But now on subsequent editions, that woman is claiming more and more screen real estate, and it's starting to feel intrusive, almost as though that gal is going to slide through the screen and "carjack" my living room.

I'm longing for the good old days where she was just a sliver in the corner of the screen

One ad that really annoys me is the Kars4Kids commercial, asking us to donate our old cars to aid low-income children all over America.

The commercial plays mostly on radio, but it also has been on television with that all-too-annoying kid and with that doltish-sounding adult, repeatedly singing, ad nauseam:

1-877-Kars 4 Kids,

K-A-R-S, Kars for Kids. 1-877-Kars 4 Kids.

Donate your car today.

Journalist Peter Hartlaub of the San Francisco Chronicle called that commercial “an assault on the senses.” Yes, it really is THAT annoying. There have also been concerns that the people running this charity have not been completely open and honest about who is actually benefiting from these car donations.

Whenever I hear that terrible commercial, it’s like an instant Pavlovian response as I rush to change either the radio or television station to preserve my peace of mind!
