Ever since it debuted in 1993 I never figured out why people thought Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman was so popular? Is it because Jane Seymour was terrific in the show or did people think it had an awesome storyline? What I think CBS had in mind when they debuted Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman was to see a whole different type of medical drama that would make it a smash hit. I think Jane Seymour really helped make the show a huge hit and having Joe Lando in the show seemed to help a lot because he became a crush worthy actor due to the show's popularity. And it also helped Michaela become a popular baby name for girls. My mom began liking Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman when INSP aired reruns of it and she thought the show was confusing but she figured out the storyline and liked it

I don't think it's so 'popular'. I think it was insanely promoted by the liberal media because it's a feminist show.

I think it was the only show I ever watched consistently just because it was fun to mock.

For one Jane Seymour is a terrific actress. The stories were also something that were somewhat unique. There were the western frontier TV shows in the past, but never one that really focused on a character that dealt with medical issues as well as dealing with the fact she was a woman in a mans field. That is what made this show different and I think many viewers caught onto that.
