To clarify, this isn't exactly about shows that were simply running out of steam, so they made a main character or main character's wife get pregnant (https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/WrittenInInfirmity) and have a kid (https://web.archive.org/web/20061031121612/http://www.jumptheshark.com/lifedeth.htm). And this isn't just about examples where shows have hidden the bump (https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/HideYourPregnancy) through various means such as the actress always wearing big coats, carrying large bags, or if she's filmed sitting or from the chest up.

This is specifically in reference to incidences where writers try to come up with creative (and often sort of ridiculous) ways to explain the character's absence or weight gain, which can ultimately negatively affect the storyline. This is the same way that some shows have had to find ways to explain the absence of characters whose actors have quit, been fired, or died-- often with the same awkward results.
