Olivia Newton-John, singer and actress, dead at 73

(CNN) Olivia Newton-John, the Australian singer whose breathy voice and wholesome beauty made her one of the biggest pop stars of the '70s and charmed generations of viewers in the blockbuster movie "Grease," died on Monday, according to a statement from her husband. She was 73.

"Dame Olivia Newton-John passed away peacefully at her Ranch in Southern California this morning, surrounded by family and friends. We ask that everyone please respect the family's privacy during this very difficult time," her husband, John Easterling, wrote in a statement on the singer's verified Instagram account. "Olivia has been a symbol of triumphs and hope for over 30 years sharing her journey with breast cancer."

The singer revealed in September 2018 that she was treating cancer at the base of her spine. It was her third cancer diagnosis, following bouts with breast cancer in the early '90s and in 2017.

Very sad news, she was a beautiful lady and talented singer. I have 45 RPM records of several of her chart hits.

Sort of ironic about the number 73, she lived to age 73 and her first top ten hit in the USA, Let Me Be There, is from 1973.

It was released in 1973, but actually reached it's peak(#6) in February, 1974

The very first time I had ever bought an Olivia Newton-John album was when my mom and I were in the FYE store and Mom and I were buying music and she saw my music selections I chose and she went to a bargain bin and browsed through it and then came back with an album in her hands and I saw that it was an Olivia Newton-John album and she said why don't you try listening to Olivia Newton-John. And I was puzzled and said "who is this girl" and so my mom encouraged me to check out her music and I asked my mom if there were any other Olivia Newton-John albums in the store and we went to the Olivia Newton-John rack and there were no other albums of hers and so I bought the album Mom found and I was amazed by Olivia's voice and it was almost princess-like and so wonderful and soon more Olivia Newton-John albums followed in my collection and I soon realized that she also did Grease because Grease is my mom's favorite movie and I liked it so much that I brought the soundtrack too

Here is my tribute in respectful memory of superstar Olivia Newton-John. I've taken some lyrics from the song "Beautiful" by Gordon Lightfoot.

At times I just don't know
How you could be anything but beautiful
278768

Laughing eyes and smiling face
278769

How could life be anything but beautiful
278770

And I must say it means so much to me
278771

To be the one who's telling you
278772

I'm telling you
278773

That you're beautiful
278774

Needless to say, this news gutted me yesterday. Not only were Olivia's talents absolutely unparalleled; she was also the definition of a class act. I'm grateful I was able to get the chance to see her in concert back in 2016, a night I will never forget. :(

My Olivia Newton-John moment came in 1980 when she appeared on an episode of 'The Midnight Special'. She sang her latest song "Magic" which was part of the soundtrack of the movie 'Xanadu' with ELO. She was so confident and sexy, seductive and sultry with her moves. I think this was quite a feat on the mind of a 17-year old mind and libido of someone like myself who was more into hard rock and heavy metal back then. But something about her in this performance spoke to me in some way that nothing ever had before. She was clearly enjoying herself and her ability to sway a listener as she did with me. The song, and her performance, was mesmerizing. She was a gifted performer, to say the least.

She pointed to the fourth wall of the camera, the viewer, and that was all there was. She simply drew you in.

This one hits pretty hard. No one in the world was as lovely as Olivia Newton-John. She always seemed so cheerful and pleasant to everyone. Her music and movies are staples in history. I know I'll miss her.

Was listening earlier today to Olivia's song Make A Move On Me, and while I was listening, if I didn't know it was Olivia, I'd swear I was listening to ABBA. The vocals in the song sound similar to ABBA, especially in the chorus.

ABBA guested on one of Olivia's TV specials in the U.S., along with Andy Gibb, and they performed together on it.

"Make a Move on Me" is one of my top 10 O.N.J. favorite songs, maybe top 5.
