These two incidents recently happened with me:


- I saw a teen girl w/ her two parents at a local pizzeria. She was wearing a pink KISS shirt and her parents were wearing Pink Floyd. Me being a huge KISS fan went up and asked her at the table which member was her favorite?

She looked shocked and I heard her whisper to her mother, "I don't know any of them." Her mother told me, "She just likes the shirt. She doesn't know anything about the band." I was shocked and I then joked with the dad if he knew who Pink Floyd was and he smirked.



- Another time on the NYC subway I spotted this young woman all tatted-up with a Metallica shirt on. I asked her what her favorite album was and she looked at me and asked, "Favorite album by who?" and I pointed at her shirt.

She goes, "Oh, my boyfriend gave me that. I didn't know that was a band. That's funny." and I was ... :confused:



I couldn't believe this. Would you wear a shirt of a music group you don't know anything about?

Thinking about it now, I realize some might say they don't know anything in order to avoid a convo. with a stranger, but I believe these people really didn't know anything about the groups.

^^^ To me, giving a shirt to someone who truly is not a fan of whoever is on the shirt is nothing but a waste of money. In my opinion, things like shirts, hats, and other created merchandise are made for those who are fans of the act and no one else.

P.S. In other words, if someone were to give me a shirt that had on it an act that I have no interest in, no, I would not keep it. Instead, I would tell them to find someone who is an actual fan of the act like they themselves are and give it to that person instead because they will most definitely appreciate it more than me.

I'd wear it if it was gift. At worst I'm sure I'd head to YouTube and check out whoever it was, see what they were like.

Would this be worse than wearing a shirt of a sports team that the person wearing it knows nothing about? That sort of thing used to drive me nuts, but I guess I can't complain about that anymore because I have a St. Louis Blues shirt and I still have my ancient Philadelphia Eagles shirt and I wouldn't be able to name a single player that currently plays for either team.

^^^ If your sports team shirts don't have a certain year on them, you should write them in somewhere, whatever time frame matters the most to you of course. :) :) :)

Eventually, I had to stop wearing my Ritchie Blackmore shirts after a certain group known for activism claimed the rainbow as their icon.

On a grander scale, I'm not completely sure that I agree that wearing a branded shirt (of any kind) is an invitation for a conversation?

If I was wearing a shirt reading "IBM" for example, I'd be fairly annoyed if someone I didn't know came up to me expecting to chat S/360, or similar.

My feeling is if it's a shirt that one wears to "bum around the house in" or has holes in it, then wear whatever you want.

I was also out with my sister's fiance recently and he spotted a guy wearing a Dunder Muffin paper shirt. He's a huge Office fan and he shouted at him "I love the smell of bacon on a woman!" and this guy had no clue.

Same as when people wear sports T shirts, jerseys, caps of teams they don't even follow or know anything about !:D

Understandable if it's teams from your own city/ area to support them even if you aren't into sports ! But if it's from another city, that's fine if you are into that team. ( Like even though I'm in LA , besides the Rams I support the Eagles ( my birth city) and the Packers ! But let's say I'll see somebody with a Seahawks T shirt and ask "oh, you like the Seahawks , they played great last Sunday "? and they are like " Huh?, nah just something to wear " ! :eek::lol:

Not a band, but back in the early 90s when I was working retail someone came in wearing a Dawn Of The Dead T-shirt. I told them I loved that movie, reply: "I've never seen it."

Back when I was restoring antiques, I used to get spattered with glue, finish stripper, etc So I'd go buy 2nd hand shirts at Salvation Army, and not risk ruining more valuable shirts.

I'd always seek shirts with obscure or quirky graphics, to entertain my co-workers. Never felt any obligation to be conversant on the subject matter.

Some were real treasures. Got one advertising the hammer museum in Haines Alaska......and had a number of people confuse that for the Hammer art museum in Los Angeles. And when asked I'd be like "no, the shirt says Haines Alaska, don't it?"

So, frequently "well meaning onlookers" can be the under informed part of the equation.

When I attended high school in the mid to late 1970's, I had a Led Zeppelin shirt that I occasionally wore at school. I don't like Zeppelin and never did like them, but I wore the shirt anyway because I wanted to give the impression that I was one of the cool, stoner dudes. :cool: :lol:

I was into bands like BTO, Head East, Starz, AC/DC when Bon Scott was their singer, Boston, Foreigner, etc. But Zeppelin? No way, man. :p

There are actually two songs from Zeppelin that I like, one is Stairway To Heaven, the classic tune they are most known for, and the other is D'yer Mak'er, it's not really a great song but the melody is catchy and it's a fun listen. But that's about it, that's all the Zeppelin that I need to hear.

No harm in it really, all they are doing is giving the band free publicity.

There has been a long history of late regarding fans of the t-shirt rather than of the actual band.

I need to post the Kanye West video where he wears a t-shirt of Testament without knowing anything of the actual band. That's one example.

I have no problem wearing any sports teams T-shirt or sweatshirt if it fits comfortably. I can usually find these at thrift stores from $2.00 - $5.00. I normally buy them to sell, but will wear them myself if I have no luck on eBay. I rarely find band shirts in my size and I wouldn't wear one if I didn't like the band or knew nothing about them. Sometimes when I'm wearing a sports team shirt I will get compliments from a fan of the team. When I tell them I'm just wearing the shirt they seem shocked and then start telling me how big a fan they are. After that I go out to my car, change into another shirt and give it to them. The look on their face is often priceless. :)

I have a lot of clothing with rock bands and singers on them because that's the style I currently wear. But one shirt actually made me a fan of his and it is my Elton John shirt and I bought it at Kohl's and later on after I bought that shirt I started collecting Elton John albums and I have most of his 90's albums and then I also have shirts of Journey Billy Joel and Fleetwood Mac and also Dolly Parton. I sure wish there was clothing of Dwight Yoakam and George Strait too
