Tony Dow, best known for his iconic sitcom role as Wally Cleaver on the hit '50s sitcom "Leave It To Beaver," has died at age 77 after a 2-month battle with Liver Cancer, presumably at his home in his native Los Angeles, California.

Tony Lee Dow was born on April 13, 1945 in Los Angeles, California and was an avid lifeguard upon being cast in the role of a lifetime as Wally Cleaver on TV's "Leave It To Beaver," appearing on all 234 episodes over the course of its 6-year run on the ABC Television Network from October 4, 1957 - June 20, 1963.

The series initially aired on CBS during its first season from October 1957 - March 1958, but was cancelled by CBS due to poor ratings, after which ABC picked up the series for the Fall 1958 TV season, with ABC airing the series permanently afterwards until Jerry Mathers decided to retire from acting.

Like Jerry Mathers as The Beaver, Tony reprised his role as Wally on a 4-year '80s revival "Still the Beaver," initially on Disney Channel (licensing the show from its distributor Universal Studios Television) before being picked up by TBS as "The New Leave It To Beaver" before airing its 100th and last show in 1989, after which Tony went Behind-the-Camera as a series director on a number of hit '80s & '90s sitcoms such as "Coach," all the while battling Clinical Depression, a Mental Illness I believe was diagnosed as an adult.

Tony is survived by his wife since 1980, Lauren Shulkind, as well as 2 grown children, including a son, Chris, with ex-wife Carol Marlow, whom he was married to from 1969 til they divorced in 1980, just before he & Lauren wed.

He's also survived by 6 young grandchildren.

RIP Tony Dow!!!

Sorry to hear... we've lost so many of the adult TV actors of the 1950s and 60s, it's especially sad when the children of those series pass on as well. Tony had been getting closer to 2023, which will mark 60 years since LITB ended.

It is with the utmost sadness I learned this morning of my co-star and lifelong friend Tony Dow’s passing. He was not only my brother on tv, but in many ways in life as well. Tony leaves an empty place in my heart that won’t be filled. He was always the kindest, most generous, gentle, loving, sincere, and humble man, that it was my honor and privilege to be able to share memories together with for 65 years. Tony was so grateful for all of the love and support from our fans across the world. My wife Teresa and I send our deepest condolences to his wife Lauren, his family and to all of those who knew and loved him. The world may have lost a star today, but the heavens gained another.

It's indeed very sad that it has come down to this, the family should have privacy and the right to make announcements related to end of life circumstances. Recently a completely inappropriate post by that has been idiot Jason Alexander announced the death of Gilbert Gottfried before the family had time to make the announcement, acts like that created the environment were an unfortunate accident like this can occur. It appears Tony is in the final days of his life, I hope the family is given respect and the opportunity to handle the information on their own terms and release it when they feel comfortable not rushed by social media zealots and enthusiasts. Many of us who grew up watching Tony are deeply saddened by the information we received today.

It's always terrible when those premature announcements happen but I'm glad he gets to have a little more time with his family. I hope he is not in too much pain and hopefully he can hang in there a little longer. This one saddens me in particular. Even though the show was called Leave it to Beaver, I think Wally and Tony Dow's portrayal was a crucial ingredient to making Leave it to Beaver as great as it was. He was a great brother, and sometimes almost like a second dad to Beaver.

I think we still see these people as kids and not as grown up people who grow old and die. Tony was born the same year WWII ended. He has lived a fairly long life. He is the same age as Joe Biden and older than Donald Trump or the Clintons.

Tony is going to die the next day or so, the news was premature. He is in a hospice with liver cancer, hard to come back from that.

Pamela Beaird (Mary Ellen Rogers/Myra) was born a few days earlier than Tony and is still with us; Steve Talbot is around the same age as Jerry, I would think; Tiger Fafara was also born in 1945. Also Buddy Hart (Chester) is a little older than Tony.

Candy Moore, who appeared once but was a well-known character actress at the time, was born in 1947 and is still alive. Ryan O'Neal (b. 1941) still with us. Actors Tim Matheson, Richard Correll, Rusty Stevens--still alive.

The only adult (at the time) actress still alive (that I can think of) is Phyllis Coates (New Neighbors), age 95.

Lee Meriwether (b. 1935) -- still with us. (edit--added)--she appeared Community Chest

Another add: Anne Nauseda (Ann Jillian) -- b.1950 (Wally, the Businessman)

Two more: Jeri Weil and Karen Sue Trent

I saw all the MeTV episodes (I don't get FETV) and they picked some good ones. One of my favorites is that practical joke episode near the end of the series.

One I remember which would have been a good one was where Wally and Eddie were fighting in the boys' bedroom, and among other things Eddie yelled that Wally was a lousy basketball player.

Beaver was hiding under the bed and after Eddie stormed out, Wally saw Beaver's feet. He pulled him out by the legs and they sat on the bed talking--finally Beaver patted him on the back, and told him he was a good basketball player.

Great brothers moment.

I believe it also means, “Rest in peace,” if I can remember my old altar boy, Latin Mass responses and my high school Latin classes.

In Terry Kirkman’s profound song, “Requiem for the Masses,” the guys in The Association also sing, Requiem aeternam.”
