He was the co-creative force along with Bert Schneider behind The Monkees. He helped define the look of the show's avant-garde style. But after The Monkees was canceled, he went into feature films, starting with Head and later his big hit starring Jack Nicholson Five Easy Pieces. May he rest in peace.
