I think he was since he had a bottle in his desk and when he goes to Mary's place always asks for alcohol (scotch). Seems that the scotch put him in a more mellow mood perhaps.

I wish Asner could have done an episode of Parks and Recreation playing Ron's grandfather. Drunk and crazy with a lot of obscenities (all bleeped out) Ron "This is my grandfather Ed, he fought in WWII and hasnt been right since."

I don't think so but he did like to drink.
