What is it and why

One of my favorite quotes from the Andy Griffith Show is from the episode "Opie the Birdman." At the very end, when Opie is releasing the birds...
Opie :(looking at his birdcage) "The cage looks real empty, don't it Pa?"
And Andy replies, amid the sound of birdsong
"But don't the trees sound nice and full?"
