A lot of the times, (like in the theme) there are parts where there only Dorothy, Blanche, and Rose are shown. And I think sometimes they are made out to be "The Golden Girls", and excluse Sophia, just because she's Dorothy's mom. In my mind, they are ALL "The Golden Girls". Has anyone else noticed this?

I was just thinking about this the other day. Sophia does seem to be excluded many times, and it's especially evident in the opening credits when a lot of clips are only of the other three. It probably was because she was Dorothy's mom, and they mainly wanted to focus on the three friends.

As I recall from earlier days, Sophia's character was supposed to be more like Stan's -- an occasional visitor who helped the story line. She was going to be a "boost" when needed. That's why the closing credits only show RM, BW, and BA. Plus, Estelle wasn't recognized for any television work at that time. She was a Broadway momma, and they hired her after seeing her work in "Torch Song Trilogy."

Fortunately, EG was a quick learner and picked up on the new things such as camera ques, timing (waiting for laughs to die down and when to say lines), and all the other things in television.

She was so good she even won an Emmy! Wooo Woooo!!!:happyface

You can say she was the Tootie of the group. ;)
