I think she must have obtained it from CTW herself. There are no signs of any VHS glitches, so it wasn't recorded on television from the 1985 airings.

But I don't know that anyone could obtain it from the archives. No one has ever been able to see the infamous episode where Margaret Hamilton guest starred as The Wicked Witch of the West and TERRIFIED millions of children all across the country for one hour in 1976. Only a few photos survive as proof that it even happened.

But as I understand it, the CTW has actually been defunct for years now. So I don't know how she got it, but that's amazing that she did. Although, it is interesting to note she only has her clips in those uploads; maybe she was not granted the full episode, but her "street segments" only.

Well, what was preserved in 1976 is very different than what was preserved in 1985. 4,500 episodes of Sesame Street will be digitized this year, and 381 were already done (https://current.org/2019/02/to-mark-shows-50th-anniversary-sesame-street-producer-adds-episodes-to-pubcasting-archive/).

It was just rebranded under the name Sesame Workshop: the same executive producers that founded CTW in the 1960s head SW: Joan Ganz and Lloyd Morrisett.

No, I mean SS has held onto EVERYTHING they made and gladly dipped into its archives. But this is one rare instance where NOTHING of it has been available. Which is a real shame, because it would be so wonderful now to see it since it such a major, odd crossover.

And I heard about the digitizing a couple of months ago, but what good is that if they're not available online? Only a small percentage of people will be able to see them in New England.

Uh, that's Joan Ganz COONEY, Mister. Would you say "Sue Weaver"* or "Julie Haddock"? I think not. ;)

*(Mrs. Garrett's ODD one-time usage of "Sue Weaver" on the phone notwithstanding)

A copy of it might still turn up. Almost 200 episodes (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doctor_Who_missing_episodes) of the British series Doctor Who were once lost, but 81 have been recovered since then.

Hopefully, they will eventually put them on the website for streaming.

Yeah, at the time she started her comedian career, she was doing the unthinkable. It was unheard of. She was a true trailblazer, and it's sad the FOL producers forgot about her.

Cooney! Joan Ganz Cooney! I can't un-three-name her! ;) (and she had been married about 2 years before that "fateful meeting" that was the seed of SS)

You don't know the story!

During the Nixon administration, Sesame Street became endangered: the president and his administration wanted to defund public television. Sesame Street gradually went from being very well-funded to eventually being on life support. Nixon wanted Sesame Street shut down.

But Joan Ganz Cooney had a secret weapon: she knew US senator Barry Goldwater. After she met with him and explained the desperate situation the CTW was in, he worked to establish a governmental budget line item for the CTW, saying "Give little Joanie Ganz what she wants."

He was a powerful US senator, and the CTW did indeed get its own line item in the congressional budget!

I know all that. It's spelled out in utmost detail in the very extensive book "Street Gang: The Complete History of 'Sesame Street' ", which I have now read 3 times.

So, yes, I know the story. But you first called her "Joan Ganz" on page 1 of this thread, and we won't have that. :nonono:

Also, there would be no SS if Fred Rogers didn't so eloquently and effectively speak in that televised hearing regarding the fate of public broadcasting. He was a godsend.

Although unfortunately, the further it went along, the earlier the target age became. I'm so glad I grew up in the classic pre-Elmo era.

Then "your generation" missed out some. I would gladly stop on SS when channel-surfing when I was a pre-teen or even a young teen, because the Muppets were top-notch.

Yeah, Elmo sucked, and dumbed down the show. He started taking up larger and larger portions of the show, as other characters began disappearing. When little Judy Winslow disappeared, I stopped watching. Oops, wrong show!
