I'm sure that it wasn't intentional, but it felt like every rendition after the first few years, got cheesier, more annoying, and more loungy. In a way, did these more desperate vocals by Linda Lavin on the theme song become reflection of how Alice Hyatt (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alice_Hyatt), despite her dreams of wanting to be a professional singer, is getting further and further from her dream, being stuck working at Mel's Diner?

Yes, I think so. The first few seasons the song had a sad, melancholy sound to it. I think it was to reflect Alice's uncertainty, fear of being all alone in a new place, etc... as she got more sure of herself, the song got peppier and more upbeat

I don't like Linda Lavin. I think she's very petty, insecure, selfish and envious but I do think she's a good singer. I'm talking about Linda, not "Alice." "Alice Hyatt" was just OK in my opinion. My favorite was always "Flo." Too bad Linda refused to share the spotlight with Polly.

I'm the opposite! I like her but I'm not impressed with her voice.
