299 Redditors agree: Luke keeping his daughter a secret was awful

In one of the best "Gilmore Girls" episodes (https://www.looper.com/887835/best-gilmore-girls-episodes-ranked/) ever written, Luke and Lorelai finally get together. The couple eventually becomes engaged, despite the reservations of Lorelai's parents, Emily (Kelly Bishop) and Richard (Edward Herrmann). However, Luke's life is thrown off balance when he discovers he has a daughter, April (Vanessa Marano), from an earlier relationship.

Luke is understandably unsure how to react to this unexpected situation. But his decision to keep April's existence a secret from Lorelai for as long as possible, according to a poll of "Gilmore Girls" Redditors (https://www.reddit.com/r/GilmoreGirls/comments/vgb4qz/worst_thing_luke_did_os_only/), was chosen by 299 voters as the worst thing the character did. One user (https://www.reddit.com/r/GilmoreGirls/comments/vgb4qz/comment/id0mw5s/) noted that Luke's other errors in judgment paled in comparison: "Keeping April from Lorelai is one of [the] very few things he did on the show that I have any issues with."

Other users agreed, with one writing (https://www.reddit.com/r/GilmoreGirls/comments/vgb4qz/comment/id2bu32/), "I personally wouldn't have been able to regain trust in a partner that does such a thing." It seems worse that Luke doesn't even come close to telling Lorelai the truth, with April inadvertently revealing her parentage instead. Still, some commenters dissented, believing kicking out Jess (Milo Ventimiglia) was a truly bad move. One commenter (https://www.reddit.com/r/GilmoreGirls/comments/vgb4qz/comment/id12hls/) wrote, "Luke took [on] a duty of care [for] that kid, and it's only because it's TV that Jess managed to turn it all around. In real life, there's a pretty good chance he ends up homeless, addicted, or dead."

Lorelai's night with Christopher devastates Luke

Some of Luke's biggest blunders with Lorelai are debatable, but the worst thing Lorelai ever does to him is pretty obvious. First, after Luke postpones the wedding so he can get to know April better, Lorelai gives him an ultimatum: elope that night, or they break up. Luke tries to discuss the situation, but Lorelai angrily leaves and later sleeps with Christopher (David Sutcliffe), Rory's father. The next morning, Luke is willing to compromise on the wedding, but Lorelai reveals the truth. Luke is stunned, and the couple ends their engagement.

Luke's earlier behavior had made her feel left out of the relationship. However, making conditions for her fiancé felt pretty harsh, and sleeping with Christopher was a poor choice that left Luke heartbroken.

However, by Season 7, the two of them reconcile. The Netflix revival series ties up some unresolved plotlines (https://www.looper.com/622343/unresolved-plotlines-in-gilmore-girls/) and implies that Luke and Lorelai have stayed together since 2007, eventually tying the knot, after many years, in November 2016.
