How come almost all the panelists on the original versions of Match Game (haven't really seen the newer ones) act like students in a remedial class?? They act as if they have Attention Deficit Disorder or something. Half of them spell their answers wrong, can't understand the questions, shout out random things, behave in unruly manners, and make irrelevent and insane comments during the show. What is going on?? It always looks like some chaotic mess, but that's what makes it SO FUNNY so I LOVE it. I'm just surprised that the people on there can dress themselves.

The show evolved into controlled lunacy. If you watch the early shows (around 1973 I believe) it was very different as far as the panelists being funny and loud (they weren't!). The show hit its stride when the panelists led by Brett, Charles, Richard, Betty started to interact more with each other and Gene. Also they all seemed like they were friends so could play off each other better. Gene Rayburn got goofier as the seasons went on too. Also, I have heard that some of them would drink between tapings (they would tape 5 to 6 shows in a row) and that would certainly make them alot looser. But I think they played it funny on purpose and werent as "stupid" as they might have appeared. Match Game is my favorite game show--I watch it all the time.

They want to be funny! BTW, the show is funny itself! LOL!

I loved Match Game because of it's crazy on-air outbursts. Gene Rayburn was hilarious and I don't know of any panel member that didn't have his or her put down to lash out at any given moment. The bickering between Brett Somers and Charles Nelson Rielly, the sharp tongue of gentle looking Betty White, the dead- on celebrity impersonations from Richard Dawson, the double-entendres, the "Dumb Dora" and "Old Man Perrywinkle" sentences and the overall "naughty" atmosphere from famous celebrities was the hook. It's looked down on now by the way too serious Hollywood stars of today. Watching Rayburn fight with the stage hands and seeing Richard Dawson banter with Dick Martin or seeing Betty White insult Brett Somers is priceless but most of today's callous viewers look at such behavior as the epitome of stupidity.

That was the beauty of the show! A lot of it was acting, but I love the banter between CNR and Bret Summers, Gene Rayburn's goofiness, and Dickie Dawson's charm and wit. I also loved guests like Betty White, Fanny Flagg, and McLean Stevenson that were funny and had good chemistry with Gene and the regulars. What a classic game show! It did look like a mess, didn't it?

All shows for the week would tape in one day. In a typical week during the 70's version, 6 episodes were taped (5 Network MG'7x and 1 syndie MGPM). From what I hear, they would tape 3-4 episodes and take a dinner break where drink was served. The last episodes in the taping day were often much more rowdier than the earlier ones...
