In one episode, Floyd has his son play for the shoe salesman in an effort to have his son "discovered" by the salesman who they thought was a talent scout. At this point and throughout the show, I thought Floyd was married. However, in the episode where Barney and Floyd are held hostage by the 3 female jail escapees, Floyd goes into town for supplies with one of the jailbreakers and sees Andy. Andy sees he has a woman and it appears that Andy is being very coy with him in regards to the "affair" that Floyd is obviously having (until Andy sees the owner of the cabin where they are being held hostage). So, is Floyd married and was Andy going along with Floyd having an affair, sort of in approval?? Or, did Floyd have a child but not a wife??? Any help is appreciated.

I'll help as much as I can. In the episode The Jinx Floyd talks about his boy playing in a baseball game, in the episode Quiet Sam, Floyd talks to Barney about his wife, in the episode Floyd The Gay Deciever Floyd has a girlfriend, my point is that sometimes Floyd is married, sometimes he's single, sometimes he has a son, sometimes he does'nt, it's just one of many Mayberry mysteries.

According to "The Andy Griffith Show Book", Floyd is married part of the time. His wife's name is Melba and their son is named Norman. Floyd has a sister, a niece named Virginia Lee and a nephew, Deputy Warren Ferguson. His shaggy dog is named Sam.

In ep 71, "Floyd, the Gay Deceiver" I think Floyd says he is a widower.

Welcome to the reality of a weekly sitcom that was written by many different teams of writers! There are so many inconsistencies in the show that whole books have been written..Apparently, no one in the 1960's thought that continuity would be such a big deal to future generations or that the show would endure throughout the ages.

I bet that, even these days, shows still have the same problem. They must keep better records of the continuity and mythology of series now, but it must be next to impossible to keep track of everything and the things you miss will be the ones you need 2 years down the line.

In an episode of Gomer Pyle U.S.M.C. where Gomer returns to Mayberry, Gomer stops on the sidewalk and starts talking to the "Old Geezer" (aka Jud on TAGS) outside of Emmet's Fix-It Shop and asks him where Floyd's Barbershop now is.
The old geezer ( Mr. Ferguson in this episode of Gomer Pyle) says Emmett bought Floyd out about a year ago, Floyd's now retired and living with his DAUGHTOR at Mount Pilot.
Anyways, I don't recall it ever being mentioned on TAGS that Floyd had a daughtor. Additionally, although I could be mistaken, I don't believe it was ever mentioned on TAGS that Floyd moved to Mount Pilot after he retired. :tiphat:

A very good question! Another poster mentioned the different writers and so forth, and not considering continuity as something important to viewers.

I do know that Floyd quoted Calvin Coolidge often. Floyd was an interesting character, to be sure.

(I've mentioned this before on another thread, that one of our local barbers for a time was mayor of my town in California about 10 or 15 years ago--kind of reminds me of Mayberry)

What's funny is the people that act on this show don't remember these things but fans of the show do.
