I remember reading that Henry Winkler (Arthur "Fonzie" Fonzarelli) vacationed one summer in Italy in 1980 when he grew a beard before shaving it off. He might have grown one other years as well.

There was also an episode of Dick VanDyke where he played a kinetoscope likeness of an earlier relative...doing the "me and my shadow" dance bit, that featured a nice stage prop beard .

I liked Goober Pyle's beard better that the Family Ties guy.
