Still one of the most bizarre episodes of the entire series. I know they were looking for a spin off but its just as odd as the Empty Next Golden Girls episode.

"The Judy Cohen Story" is indeed one of the most bizarre episodes of "Good Times," BestTVever...and it's undoubtedly one of the worst. It almost makes "The Hustle" (the episode in which the kids sell discarded underwear and lingerie to the other tenants in the apartment complex in order to send Florida on a weekend vacation to Lake Geneva) look watchable by comparison.

I always had my suspicions that "The Judy Cohen Story" was a backdoor pilot for a proposed spinoff that thankfully never materialized. It's right up there with that "Golden Girls" episode--the backdoor pilot for what would ultimately evolve into "Empty Nest," sans Rita Moreno (but co-starring David "Joe Isuzu" Leisure, playing virtually the same character he would later portray on the retooled and recast "Empty Nest"--but under a different character name)--you had mentioned, as well as the infamous "Married...With Children" episode that eventually spawned the mercifully short-lived "Married..." spinoff "Top Of The Heap" (co-starring a pre-"Friends" Matt LeBlanc). Alas, despite her energetic singing voice, we never heard from Judy again.

Norman Lear saw Judy perform and wanted to give her a show. They did not know what to do with her and thought maybe promote a pilot through Good Times. The show never made it to pilot. Judy is talented but they needed to work on building a show around her. Norman Lear was on fire in the 1970s and all his shows and spin offs were wildly successful. But there were a few bad ideas and this was one of them. I think the show is so bad its good. I love to watch it just for the bad acting when JJ is laughing when she is on stage. Its the fakest laugh I have ever seen. And JJ thinks he's going to be rich by being her agent? He had no experience in that. If the show was smart, they would have made JJ become a stand up comic and let him do what he naturally did.
