As the mystery is solved, Jim finds that Miss Thomas has locked Kathy's essay in the safe, and he eventually retrieves it and reads it.

So Kathy explains everything to him in his office. I'm not sure why they chose that route for an ending. The safe-locking and use of the office seemed to have nothing to do with anything.
