View Full Version : The First Gladys Kravitz
baronzzz 08-02-2002, 09:30 PM I havent seen Bewitched in a few years but I have a feeling they dont run the first couple of years very much.
Anyway, for those of you who havent seen those early years, a wonderful character actress named Alice Pearce played Mrs. Kravitz. She even won an Emmy for her portrayal in 1966 (she died before receiving it; Her husband went to the podium to accept it for her).
Not to take anything away from Gladys Kravitz Number 2(Sandra Gould), but Alice Pearce was extremely funny in the character. Watch for her if they ever run those episodes. I've also seen Alice Pearce in Dennis the Menace and other sitcoms in that era. I think she worked alot.
Pitooey 08-02-2002, 10:26 PM I remember her. She was extremely funny and perfect for the role. I never knew that she was gone before she received her Emmy. How sad........... :(
~*Hannah_Lee*~ 08-10-2002, 06:49 PM She was an excellent actress. It is so sad that she didnt get to recieve her Emmy. However, I am more fond of the second Mrs. Kravitz, I guess it is because she is the one I got used to watching.
60sSitcomFan 08-19-2002, 08:45 AM My memory is getting worse.. I remember at least 2 Mrs. Kravitz'.. anyone have a picture of the first one? thanks :)
jehobden 09-05-2002, 12:15 AM To confuse matters even more, there was a MISS (Harriet) Kravitz, Abner's sister, for a few of the B&W eps that aired, probably after Alice Pearce became too ill to keep working. She pretty much served the same function as Gladys, seeing strange things that would be normal by the time Abner saw them. She was played by Mary Grace Canfield, who is probably best known as Ralph Monroe from Green Acres.
P.S.: Bewitched trivia ?: What was Gladys Kravitz' maiden name?
ANTHONY6 10-01-2002, 10:54 AM I NEVER SAW THE B/W EPISODES OF BEWITCHED UNTIL NICK AT NIGHT STARTED AIRING THEM. THE ONLY MRS. KRAVITZ I REMEMBERED WAS SANDRA GOULD. I LOVED ALICE PEARCE'S MRS KRAVITZ, SHE WAS SO FUNNY IN HER BETRAYAL OF THE CHARACTER. SHE DESERVED THE EMMY. DON'T GET ME WRONG I THINK SANDRA GOULD DID A WONDERFUL JOB, BUT ALICE PEARCE BROUGHT A MORE NEUROTIC REALNESS TO THE CHARACTER.
60sSitcomFan 10-01-2002, 11:18 AM which Gladys is the one in my picture? (That's the one I liked!)
:) :) :)
AAAAAAABNER!!! You'll never believe what I saw!!
(Abner reading the paper, doesn't look up): You're right Gladys, I won't believe it.

Yes, that's what I liked about Alice Pearce's portrayal was how neurotic she was. And just seeing all this strange stuff from the Stephens house and Abner not believing her was hysterical. It was just pushing her over the edge. It seemed like Abner was going to have to commit her at any time!

Wow! Great trivia question! In which episode was this mentioned? (No, this isn't a test, I'd just like to know.)
One of my favorite lines was by Alice (Gladys # 1):
Gladys finds 3 boys tied up in the Stephens' bedroom. Since they couldn't have tied up each other, who did?
Gladys: "No, Abner. There were three boys tied up! If there were two boys tied up I wouldn't have to call you. Don't you understand?!"
Arfies 12-25-2002, 05:20 PM It's mentioned in at least 2 that I know of- "Illegal Separation" and "The Prodigy."
BonnieHuntFan 01-14-2003, 06:19 PM Alice Pearce was a funny funny comedienne. She even had her own show "The Alice Pearce Show" which ran on ABC it was a 15 minute variety show in 1949 with Variety Sketches and Musical Numbers. Alice deserved the Emmy and i wish she was here to get it.
