Because back in 1976 no one new that James was going to get killed off, so lots a people figured that The Evanses were really going to move out of the ghetto. So with that being said, I just can’t stomach this episode much anymore.

I hate this episode because its officially when the show jumps the shark. The show tried and failed to fill in James's void but it did not work. I did not like Penney and JJ became less funny. I think they tried to make him almost a father figure. Worse yet Bookman's character got much more airtime after James. Damn Damn Damn

What a cruel way to tell the family. No phone call, no door visit from the police. I cant imagine receiving a letter (telegram) telling of such a tragedy. They should have made James turn gay and run off with another man

I dont ever plan to watch that episode again unless someone sends me an original CBS airing or if someone on here has a question about that episode lol

I rarely watch it or the ‘funeral episode’. It makes me want to curse out Norman Lear. Instead of ‘Damn, Damn, Damn’, it’s three ‘Fock you’s’!

It was the beginning of the end... There were a few good episodes after James died, but not many.... I didn't like the episodes when Florida left

I remember someone saying something like,"When People are having such a good time, tragedy is sure to strike soon." He mentioned going to a party where everybody was having such a good time, he had a feeling something really bad was going to happen soon and it did. The Family hosting the party ended up getting murdered that very night. Chilling stuff!

I cant think of another show where one cast member being removed had such an impact on the show. James was so essential to the show. Strong father figure and was the anti-Willona which was comic relief. Willona and JJ no longer had their foil. Florida's banter with James was also missed. Perhaps it would have been better to recast him like Bewitched and Roseanne.

If they chose to replace James, I think the actor who played Carl would have been a good choice. Seems they were trying to make him similar to James, I think maybe they were planning on him being a regular but the audience never warmed up to him

The guy who played Carl is a brilliant actor. He did stuff on Little House. The reason Carl never was a hit on the show was the writers. They made him an antagonist to Florida. His role was cast to throw all kinds of unconventional and controversial issues for the show which never really worked. The show desperately needed that strong father figure to balance out all the zany stuff everyone else was doing. The scripts were running off the rails with dumb stuff. JJ eventually lost his comedic place on the show and he became sort of the father figure later on. Penny served as a cute character but they almost turned child abuse into comedy. Desperately out of ideas for a family and even Bookman was given an increased role after James left. They needed someone to ground the family into some sort of reality. Post James everyone's character changed into something they were never meant to be.

How about the alternative universe when the Evans move to Mississippi to a small town of poor blacks and rednecks? Where JJ says “Dynomite!” and people look at him funny, Thelma gets a white boyfriend whose relationship is not accepted by either culture, and Michael “the militant midget” gets a full scholarship at Ole Miss and heads the black student union.

That would have been a good show.

Would work better as a drama, not a comedy!
