FRIDAY: Peyton Manning quarterbacks Friday nights with the return of 8 p.m. game show “Capital One College Bowl,” timed perfectly to football season, and leading into Friday’s #1 newsmagazine, “Dateline NBC.” In November, the laughs begin with George Lopez’s family comedy “Lopez vs. Lopez” at 8 p.m., teeing up the third season of Dwayne Johnson bio-series “Young Rock” at 8:30 p.m.

SUNDAY: #1 primetime television show for a record 11 consecutive years, “NBC Sunday Night Football” will broadcast 20 regular-season games throughout the NFL season.

“While leaning into our strong, stable schedule in the fall, we’re also rethinking legacy launch timing to give our shows the best chance for success,” said Frances Berwick, Chairman, Entertainment Networks, NBCUniversal Television and Streaming. “With the huge reach that our affiliate partner stations provide, coupled with exclusive next-day availability on Peacock, our NBC shows will truly be accessible to audiences in any way that they want to watch.”

“We’re continuing to invest in content for NBC that not only has the huge broad appeal that defines the platform, but also the ability to continue to find fans across our platforms following its broadcast debut; a strategy we’ve already seen a lot of success with this season,” said Susan Rovner, Chairman, Entertainment Content, NBCUniversal Television and Streaming. “We're very excited by the new additions to our lineup, which we believe will super-serve our linear audience. In addition, we will continue to develop and order pilots, all of which will help strengthen a robust year-round season.”

In 2021, NBC’s holiday programming reached more than 94 million viewers on the strength of an unrivaled lineup featuring dynamic live event specials and returning classics. The festivities continue this season as country music icon Dolly Parton headlines the film “Dolly Parton’s Mountain Magic Christmas.” NBC’s New Year’s Eve celebration is also back as Miley Cyrus continues the newest holiday tradition with the return of “Miley’s New Year’s Eve Party,” joining annual favorites “Christmas in Rockefeller Center,” “The National Dog Show” and “Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade,” which stood as the #1 entertainment program of 2021 in the key 18-49 demo.

The drama continues midseason as James Spader and “The Blacklist” return for the 10th season of the beloved stalwart series, along with second seasons for a pair of comedy hits, “American Auto” and “Grand Crew,” which reached more than 24 million and 17 million viewers, respectively, across U.S. viewing platforms this year. Also joining the lineup is the debut of “Night Court,” a sequel to the beloved legal sitcom with John Larroquette reprising his role as D.A. Dan Fielding and starring Melissa Rauch as Judge Abby Stone.

The world of unscripted competition is red hot for midseason and summer with a pair of competition imports: new game show “The Wheel,” hosted by comedian Michael McIntyre and based on a smash hit UK format, features contestants aiming to win big with the help of celebrity guests playing on a giant spinning wheel, and Dutch format "Million Dollar Island,” which will feature 100 contestants who attempt to forge friendships and build alliances as they plot to stay on a remote desert island for up to 50 days and compete to win their share of the ultimate $1 million prize.

Returning competition favorites are also on the menu as Jimmy Fallon hosts celebrities for more musical fun and games in the second season of “That’s My Jam,” and viewer favorite “The Wall” returns to the party. Dick Wolf also enters the unscripted space with the docuseries “LA Fire and Rescue,” which follows the real-life heroes of the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

The fall schedule is preceded by an action-packed summer on NBC, where the network has ranked #1 in the key demo for nine consecutive years and #1 in total viewers for six years running. Season 17 of “America’s Got Talent” kicks things off in May along with new social media-inspired dance challenge “Dancing with Myself,” featuring Shakira, Nick Jonas and Liza Koshy. “American Ninja Warrior” is back to thrill fans in June for season 14 and in July an all-new season of “Who Do You Think You Are?” debuts with Allison Janney, Zachary Levi, Nick Offerman, Billy Porter, Zachary Quinto and Bradley Whitford. August sees the arrival of iconic game show “Password,” from Jimmy Fallon and hosted by Emmy Award-winning actress Keke Palmer, who will be joined by Fallon and a celebrity cast.

NBC has more shows in the top 20 than any other network in the key 18-49 demographic and finished the season #1 in the demo for the eighth time in nine seasons. The network is home to the #1 unscripted program “The Voice,” the #1 drama with “This Is Us,” and the #1 comedy with “Saturday Night Live.” “This Is Us” and “Saturday Night Live” are the #1 and #2 entertainment programs on broadcast in the demo. Additional late-night hits “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” and “Late Night with Seth Meyers” are both #1 in their time periods in the demo.

As part of NBC’s rolling pilot process, the following projects have been picked up to pilot with decisions yet to be made on series greenlights: “Blank Slate,” “Found,” “Irrational,” “Unbroken” and an untitled drama from Mike Daniels. With NBC’s 52-week scheduling strategy, these pilots – if picked up to series – could be possibilities for later in the 2022-23 season or could roll over to the 2023-24 season.

During their time on the island, contestants gain and lose bracelets through various challenges, but when a player leaves the island, they must choose who will receive their portion of the money. In this intense competition, the strength of your personal bonds are just as important as being the ultimate player.

Studio Lambert will produce.

NEW HOLIDAY SPECIALS

“DOLLY PARTON’S MOUNTAIN MAGIC CHRISTMAS”
A modern-day movie musical about the making of a network TV special, “Dolly Parton’s Mountain Magic Christmas” is the frenetic backstage story and delightful on-camera results of Dolly’s desire to uplift an exhausted world’s spirits by sharing the unique “mountain magic” she has always found in and around Dollywood at Christmas. Throughout the movie’s production numbers and rehearsal chaos, Dolly finds herself taking a private journey into her past, guided by the mysterious appearances of her personal Three Wise Men. When it’s time for her big special to air live, a renewed and inspired Dolly goes rogue and shows the world that the real magic of Christmas lies in the hearts of the children we all once were, the realization that Christmas is about the people we share it with, and how her faith remains the common thread between Christmases past, present, and future.

David Rambo will write and executive produce with Sam Haskell and Dolly Parton. Billy Levin and Bobby Kelly will produce. Hudson Hickman will co-executive produce.

Warner Bros. Television will produce in association with Magnolia Hill Productions and Sandollar Productions.

College Bowl will be nice seeing in the fall. Lopez vs. Lopez though, deserved better. La Brea should have moved an hour later, with New Amsterdam's final season sent to Fridays premiering after College Bowl finishes. If they didn't want comedies against Abbott Elementary (assuming that stays at 9:00), The Voice results could have moved to 9:00 with Lopez leading off the night at 8:00. Dolly Parton's Mountain Magic Christmas sounds really good.

The "Lenkov-verse" shows may not have been my cup of tea, either (and I wished that Magnum P.I. 2018 hadn't been ordered to series in the first place), but that is what you get when its original network cancels a Top-25 show in viewers. I'm still curious as to where Magnum P.I. 2018 will end up (My most probable guess is Sundays after the SNF season is over, possibly paired with The Blacklist.)

I also wish Manifest's numbers during its last season on NBC were better (i.e. beating SVU and Organized Crime) so its cancellation would be avoided in the first place, especially if they were the same as Magnum P.I. 2018's.

Manifest I think was getting an 0.4 demo most weeks, which is easily stronger than long past its prime The Blacklist. How that ancient show is still surviving with the female lead Megan Boone gone is ridiculous. The Blacklist never deserved renewal over Manifest.

NBC May Give Third Hour of Nightly Primetime Back to Its Local Affiliates; The Earliest This Could Take Place is Fall of 2023

https://deadline.com/2022/08/nbc-could-give-third-hour-of-primetime-back-to-affiliates-1235101078/

I wonder if this will make CatsRule plotz...

NBC won't drop the 10 p.m. hour — at least for 2023-2024 season (https://deadline.com/2022/12/nbc-10-pm-hour-multi-cam-comedies-procedurals-1235200569/)

A report last August (https://www.thewrap.com/nbc-preliminary-talks-dropping-primetime-hour/) about NBC considering dropping the 10 PM hour and giving it back to its affiliate stations rattled the creative community with the prospect of losing several hours of prime real estate for drama programming. NBCUniversal CEO Jeff Shell in October acknowledged the discussions, stressing that no final decisions have been made.

A decision has now been made, at least (https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/nbc-keep-10-pm-hour-2023-2024-season/) when it comes to the next 2023-24 broadcast season. I hear Susan Rovner, Chairman, Entertainment Content, NBCUniversal Television and Streaming, relayed the message during recent agency presentations, stressing that the network will not be getting out of the 10 PM hour.

According to sources, the statement is true for the 2023-24 season while the company continues to evaluate its options. A potential 10 PM exit is considered a cost-cutting move amid declining linear viewing for entertainment programming, and Shell has indicated that NBCU intends to “reallocate resources” toward areas of the company that are growing. Asked in October if he expects other media giants to follow NBCU’s lead in possibly abdicating the 10 PM hour, Jordan Wertlieb, head of station owner Hearst Television, replied, “I expect they will and I hope they will.”

A potential NBC exit from the 10 PM hour would have a major impact on the network’s Dick Wolf procedural franchises which have built three-hour nightly lineups, One Chicago on Wednesday and Law & Order on Thursday. Both are doing well, including the 10 PM anchors.

In light of that success, it’s not surprising that NBC is on the hunt for more procedurals but I hear the network also is looking for new takes on the genre. I hear during the ongoing NBCU agency presentations, the executives played a trailer for the upcoming Found and touted the Nkechi Okoro Carroll drama as an example of the distinct, character-driven procedurals different from the Dick Wolf brand that NBC would be targeting.

I hear the network also is looking for successors to hit family drama This Is Us, which ended its run in May, and medical drama New Amsterdam, which is now in its final season.

On the comedy side, I hear NBC brass are happy with its new sitcom Lopez vs. Lopez, which recently received a full-season order, and bullish on the upcoming Mike O’Malley multi-camera comedy series starring Jon Cryer.

The network is in the market for more multi-cams and, while single-camera comedies do not make a lot of financial sense on broadcast, NBC is looking to maintain its comedy brand with The Office-like workplace comedies and is open to big swings in the arena in the vein of The Good Place. Coming up for the network are the returns of single-camera comedies American Auto and Grand Crew which both did solid business during their maiden seasons.

Across the rest of NBCU’s linear networks, I hear the company is on the lookout for more lower-cost co-productions for Syfy for as little as $500,000 an episode.

Night Court premiered with a 1.0 and 0.9 demo for its first two episodes, a massive hit by today's standards. (Usual top comedies Young Sheldon and Ghosts only get 0.6s.) Now the test will be to see how Night Court holds up in week two.

icecream
02-09-2023, 02:06 PM
Enough with lousy mockumentaries! NBC finally has something decent comedy wise with the Night Court spin-off, what they need to do is get a good multi-camera sitcom to pair with it next season (I said good, not Lopez vs. Lopez level of awful). I hope St. Denis Medical does not get a series order.

James28
02-14-2023, 02:07 AM
Based on the ratings it's been getting up to this point, I think the Night Court sequel series may be the greatest persuader for NBC to not drop the 10pm hour from their primetime schedule. I have admired Melissa Rauch ever since I started watching The Big Bang Theory regularly on CBS during its season six, and I'd hate to see a potential flagship like Night Court 2023 going to waste anytime soon (like, for example, suffering a second-season downfall).

Hey did you all know there was a middle reunion on Lopez Vs Lopez, a few months back. Neil Flynn & Eden Sher portrayed Father and daughter. Although they didn’t portray Mike & Sue Heck.

It was great to see them on screen together again! I wished they portrayed Mike & Sue. Hopefully one day will have a HECK of the middle Christmas Reunion.
