They were: "Mountain Wedding" (#94) His first appearance-listen for "Old Aunt Maria" "Ernest T. Bass Joins the Army" (#99) Just to get a uniform to impress girls-like old Jelsic Sturm ("Jelsic, walk with me, Jelsic, dance with me, Jelsic, kiss my mouth!") "My Fair Ernest T. Bass" (#113) Andy cleans him up and passes him off as his cousin from Raleigh-the classic "how do you do Mrs. Wiley?" "The Education of Ernest T. Bass" (#133) Helen becomes his "mother figure" "Malcolm at the Crossroads" (#164-color) Fighting Malcom Merriweather for a job at the school crossing ("them cold-cream guards is tough!") goofy1 05-27-2001, 02:34 AM "Ernest T. Bass Joins the Army" is my favorite Ernest episode. From his hillarious medical exam, to Barney accidently breaking the new courthouse window while trying to keep Ernest from it. BARNEY:Just give me five minutes with him ANDY:He'd kill ya' ANDY:He's a strange one RECRUITER:He's a wild man BARNEY:He's a nut! Ernest was played by Howard Morris, also directed several episodes. I believe the SFC recruiter also played on Gomer Pyle, USMC. Anyone confirm or list more of his credits? Lafalot 06-03-2001, 10:37 PM Oh, yes, definitely. The actor who played the recruiting Sergeant was Allan Melvin, whose credits included Sgt. Hacker the cook on Gomer Pyle, USMC, Sam the butcher on The Brady Bunch, and numerous "heavies" on TAGS, including the truck farmer who "wanted Barney for a customer", Fred Plummer, the store clerk who threatened to "break every bone in Barney's body" until he was attacked by Barney's judo instructor wearing Barney's "salt & pepper" suit ("It hangs just right for the dips"), The prisoner who Barney & Gomer let escape while Andy was on vacation, and Clarence "Doc" Malloy, who holed up in the Mayberry trailer park with his girl, until Barney drove the car and trailer into town. DarleneIllyria 06-04-2001, 03:04 PM Don't forget he was Jake on the episode 'Barney's First Car' and he was also the detective in the hotel in the episode 'Andy and Barney in the Big City' sonnet_harbor 06-06-2001, 10:18 PM Originally posted by Lafalot: Believe it or not, Ernest only appeared in 4 B&W episodes and one color. I'm the new guy and I screwed up. Anyway, I just wanted to mention that Allan Melvin was later reincarnated as a "Barney" in his own right - Archie Bunker's best friend, Barney Hefner, on All In The Family. |
