Hi --
I am hoping someone can help me understand something about the David Merrifield case.
The Fandom page for this case says the segment aired in December 1995. Yet, the same Fandom page indicated there are newspaper articles from February 1995 that indicate police know who Merrifield was going to meet that day, which would (based on the UM segment) that 10 months before the segment aired, the suspect was known.
Does this make sense? Or is there something I am forgetting?

I can think of at least two cases right off the top of my head - Mickey Jo West and Stanley Griezic - where the police were aware of who the suspects were but they did not mention them by name on the broadcast.

IIRC, years ago family members of David posted on this forum essentially asking for us to stop talking about it because they knew who was responsible but that person had died.

I have the feeling the family don't want people to know why he was murdered. Maybe it was not something they would be proud of and they want the story to die with the case since the police closed it. They want it to go away.

This is right up there with the Huston Police requesting that we never talk about the Mary Morrii cases in terms of total BS. Since when is someone's niece the arbiter of whether or not we can freely discuss something?

I know it's an old post, but on Unsolved.com's writeup on the case, someone in the comments asks if this case has been closed and Unsolved Mysteries responded by saying as of 2017 the Dallas PD considers the case still open.

I thought the case was resolved as well, however if you look at the matter the Dallas police solved this, where is the statement from them. Also even if the subject in question is deceased, you always have a name given by police to show the individual is dead and can't be prosecuted any further for the crime. They just don't keep it secret. Something is wrong here, things don't add up.

pure speculation, or maybe stating the obvious, but it seems like a corruption issue. not that I am saying David was corrupt, but if he knew about something, he might have been silenced. in turn, his family may not want to be involved or may have been told to distance for their own safety.
