"Law & Order" & "Law & Order: Organized Crime" Renewed at NBC

Both "Law & Order" and "Law & Order: Organized Crime" will be back for new seasons. NBC has renewed "Law & Order" for a 22nd season and spin-off "Organized Crime" for a third season.

The renewals are not unexpected as both series were expected to continue.



“The iconic Law & Order brand has long been synonymous with NBC and we couldn’t be more excited to bring back all three of these dramas for the 2022-23 season,” said Lisa Katz, President, Scripted Programming, NBCU Entertainment and Streaming.

“It’s a testament to the brilliance of Dick Wolf’s storytelling that audiences remain compelled by these unforgettable characters week after week, year after year.”

Dick Wolf calls getting nine shows renewed a bigger "miracle" than getting them scheduled (https://variety.com/2022/tv/news/dick-wolf-law-and-order-1235269647/)

Before his three Law & Orders, three One Chicago shows and three FBI shows were recently renewed, Wolf expressed some worry to Variety. “The biggest miracle was getting nine broadcast series scheduled,” Wolf said in mid-April. “The bigger miracle will be getting all nine of them renewed.” Wolf Entertainment now produces 198 hours of TV per season: 66 hours for the Law & Order franchise, 66 hours for One Chicago and 66 for the FBI franchise. As Variety's Cynthia Littleton notes: "Wolf Entertainment’s production feat has come into sharper focus now that there’s a season’s worth of ratings data to peruse. Indeed, while no one in Hollywood was paying attention, Wolf quietly reshaped the network television business to his own liking...Wolf, who changed primetime in the 1990s with Law & Order, has blazed trails, a generation later, for a markedly different era of entertainment. He took advantage of an industry in transition to bulldoze past obstacles to creating the linear TV version of both a binge-watch and an intricate narrative metaverse. Universal Television-based Wolf Entertainment has filled three nights of primetime across two networks with blocs of scripted dramas from the Law & Order, One Chicago and FBI constellations." Fellow TV megaproducer Greg Berlanti admires Wolf for producing shows that don't get critical or Emmy attention. “Wherever I go in the country, wherever I go in the world, people reference Dick Wolf shows,” says Berlanti. “Sometimes folks in New York and L.A. get so focused on shows that get a ton of Emmy nominations. But the priority is telling stories that move an audience. The real value of any show is ultimately its relationship with an audience.
