Spongebob Squarepants rated higher than Daffy Duck?

Gimme a break...

Why is Mickey Mouse not in the top 10?? And eww...SpongeBob?

But on a positive note, PPG made it at 13. :)

I'm confused about the way they judged this...
I guess I'll have to pick up a copy and read it.
Some were nominated by themselves, others were nominated as duos which I can unserstand, since you always think about the road runner when you think about Wile E. Coyote, but Bart and Lisa aren't a "duo" like Yogi and Boo-Boo.

Not too many Disney characters on this list either....

If someone would tell me who the heck Gerald McBoing-Boing is, I would greatly appreciate it.
Sounds like someone I knew in my Fraternity...

Mickey Mouse? Is down that low? and Winnie the Pooh and Scooby Doo?, those are very popular cartoons, I don't think Bart and Lisa should have been on their, they should have them spared for other cartoons. Donald Duck should have been up higher and Tom and Jerry they were a funny pair! I don't think Wonder Woman should have been on their. Tweety and Sylvester are very popular too. I don't like Tv Guide, they don't know what they're doing!

Gerald McBoing Boing is this little kid that everytime he opens his mouth, sound effects come out. That's all, just sound effects. I think someone was playing around with Mary Jane when they created it. It's lame if you ask me. Came out in the...uh...50s or 60s.

I somewhat agree with the list.

But I think Pikachu should have been lower, and Daria higher.

I've never even heard of Gerald McBoing Boing before. It does sound like someone was playing around with Mary Jane when they came up with the idea.

Nope, still doesn't ring a bell. I think TV guide should lay off these top 50 lists for a while.

Or, their next list should be "Top 50 ways TV Guide screws up these lists."

It's really hard to pick the top 50 of anything because all it is...is an opinion. However, I can't really argue with Bugs Bunny being #1, those cartoons are hillarious :D

I was disappointed that Elmer Fudd and Yosemite Sam weren't on the list. I still can't figure out why Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner were ranked so low. Don't even get me started about Tom and Jerry!

A lot of those baby-boomer era shows may be forgotten at worst to some of you, being younger.Being older and therefore kind of dating myself, I'll fill in some blanks..

GERALD McBOING BOING was a landmark film that led to, believe it or not, BEAVIS AND BUTTHEAD and other sophistication design films. That included EVERYTHING in the pre-Scooby era for TV.

UPA produced the GERALD cartoon.Based on a Dr.Suess written record, narrated by old-time radio comic Harold Peary aka The Great Gildersleeve (think Bugs Bunny's taxidermist nemesis in 1945's HARE CONDITIONED), the cartoon was narrated by radio actor Marvin Miller. He also showed up on cartoons by DePatie-Freleng, Hanna-Barbera, Filmation, Warner Bros.(I believe), future UPAs, and Disney (including narration for SLEEPING BEAUTY, 1959). Bobe (sic) Cannon directed. Future PEANUTS animator Bill Melendez was amongst the animators and Cannon and future Jay Warder Bill Scott adapted Dr.Suess's story. There were some more Gerald shorts and a TV show, before HB.

Some others were KRAZY KAT, one of the first and most popular comic strips before PEANUTS, by george Herriman as comic, and animated by Paramount, mostly through the 1960s for King Features, and by Columbia in a totally unrecognizable version where the title character looked like Felix.

CRUSADER RABBIT, originally produced and created by Alex Anderson, Jerry Fairbanks, and Jay Ward, was the first animated series, later done by Shull Bonsall, and TV spots and Dave Wolper.
Originally aired in 1949.

Many of these are forgotten...due to being black and white or in color but for various reasons simplky not being shown as muchand others (Underdog, wrongly being regarded as banned due to a pill used, is largely pulled due to being considered too bland by our "friends" the sponsors , the same reason crooner Perry Como's death last year didn't attract Sinatra-like press coverage).

Another one often forgotten, SPUNKY AND TADPOLE, by a small studio, Beverly Film studio, starring the voice of Hanna-Barbera regular voiceman Don Messick, the voice of Scooby-Doo.

Spongebob Squarepants and Angelica Pickles definitely are up there way up too high.Speaking of Spongebob, he's okay but in our loocal ANTIQUE shop he was placed there (yeah right like a three year old still-in character qualifieas as being antique!)

Bugs Bunny belongs up there as regards in my humble opinion to the pre-1955 shorts when he became a girlish rabbit, even when NOT in drag, prancing around. (Please don't even start me on the imposter, Donald Duckish who was Daffy).

Linus the Lionhearted, the lion for POST's 1960s Crispy Critters deserves to be in the top ten at least for the fact that made a commercial for a product more of a story than is the usual case (contrast with Strawberry Shortcake, My Little Pony and Transformers in the eighties).

And Ruff and Reffy for being Hanna-Barbera's first show.Huckleberry houdn for being the first NON hosted daytime cartoon.(GERALD McBOING BOING before it was a PRIME TIMER, in 1956, four years BERFORE FLINTSTONES and 34 before SIMPSONS!)

Daffy should have been #1, though Bugs was funny too. Charlie Brown should have been higher than 8, and what were Boris and Natasha doing way down at 45, Donald Duck at 43, Sylvester and Tweety at 33, Popeye at 20, and Top Cat no higher than 18, while Gumby, Sponge Bob, and the like were up higher? It's like when they made Seinfeld #1 instead of I Love Lucy. They're not playing with a full deck. They should have included Garfield, Yacky Doodle and Chopper, and Pixie, Dixie, and Mr. Jinks instead of all those lame ones.

Heavens to Murgatroid (sp?) I forgot Snagglepuss. He should have been in there somewhere too. I was glad to see Rocky and Bullwinkle and Fred and Barney near the top. Homer and Bart are funny too.

they got #1 and #2 RIGHT ON so the rest doesn't even really matter. It's RARE that I ever agree with the top 2 in a list, so I think they did a great job, although they made a "few" mistakes, mainly not included Yosemetee Sam.

That's the biggest joke of a list I've ever seen (and I've seen some bad ones)!! Only 3 picks should be in the top ten - Bugs, Fred & Barney, and Charlie Brown/Snoopy. Nothing else in the top 10 should be anywhere close (with the possible exception of Homer, who could go in the top 20).

Some real mysteries on the "rated too low" side are:

19. Mickey Mouse
22. Scooby-Doo
43. Donald Duck
47. Porky Pig
50. Tom and Jerry

And on the "rated way too high" side we have:

4. Beavis and Butt-head
7. Angelica Pickles
9. SpongeBob SquarePants
10. Cartman
13. The Powerpuff Girls

None of these should be in the top 40, much less the top 13, IMHO!!!

If this were in no particular order.... I think its a great list.
Most of these make sense as the top 50.

I just disagree with how they are arranged.
I agree completely with Bugs Bunny being number 1.
But after that it all goes downhill....

Warner Brothers OWNED with characters.
But when it came to storytelling -- nothing beats Disney.

Nah, don't go blamin' that crappy list on reefer, 'cause if pot was the *ahem*''inspiration", then Betty Boop would've placed much higher (if you'll pardon the expression...);)

Don't flip out guys. Some of these made sense. Beavis and Butthead should have been in the top ten, any moron knows that they were EXTREMELY FAMOUS!!!!
How can you be mad that they put Spongebob so high? He's REALLY famous too. I also think that Cartman should have been Kenny, since Kenny is WAY more popular among fans than Cartman. I think Angelica Pickles Was WAY too high. No one likes her.

oh yea, the Simpsons haven't been running for 15 seasons and are contracted to go five more... yea, Homer DOESN'T belong on an all-time cartoon character list.... I just recently got into The Simpsons, but I understand why Homer is such a popular character. It is a very intelligent show.

Beavis And Butthead were great too, they were idiots, but you must be blind if you don't remember a time the whole nation was crazy about them.

actually, on the SP boards I read now, most of them think they should've kept Kenny dead for good instead of bringing the character back after the Kenny-less season 6.

Cartman, Timmy and Butters are the top 3 South Park characters IMO

Gerald would have been an original if his debut came out when his actual one, his movie one did: he was actually a Dr.Suess creation and looked ENTIRELY different, and tlaler than, the animated versaion.

The UPA studios who created Mr.Magoo bought the rights to this one.DIsatributed then by Col,umbia, but self-managed, they qwon a Oscar for McBoing Boing. This was actually a huge landslide, one of the best cartoons ever made (and MUCH better than a certain Bugs Bunny opera short which everyone seems to like but me).

Marvin Miller, UPA's Mel Blanc (Like Mel then and Phil hendrie today, did diffderent voices but his talents were quite different, in that they were largely for serialized dramma-adventure radio--in stuff like the type currewnt flicks like M.Night Shyamalan';s THE VILLAGE and the upcoming Paramount/DeLaurentiis's retro-30s reporter-future flick SKY CAPTAIN, in radio shows like THE SHADOW, ONE MANS FAMILY and THE PHANTOM,among others, Marvin Miller functioned as a Mel Blanc of high drama and adventure!!:D :D ).

Gerald's gimmick was he would go boing boing (though not wiht any familiar toon effects) rather than talk, kinda of like future JUNGLE BOOK and already radio legend Phil harris's then current (in 1950 when GERALD was done) THE THING, where a drummer beats the skins instead of the future Baloo saying what the mysterious thing is..).

Besides Marvin Miller, Howard Morris supposedly did some sounds for the later installemnts by the time that the show got to TV in 1956, this would be GMcBB the first,pre-HB Morris appearance, in everything from JETSONS to COW & CHICKEN for HB, BARNEY GOOGLE (where he MUST have sounded very out of place, since Paramount-Harvey made these, with their typical "music by WINSTON SHARPLES" common in FELIX,CASPER,etc.)

Marion Richman was the later voice for Gerlad's mom--she was in MGM, Warner Bros.,UPA and possibly Lantz and Disney ()Lantz's frugal nature might've only let his use Grace WOODY Stafford for all females by this time..)

Gewrlad's a major innovation for movie shorts AND TV but would be too obscure, sadly.Homer Simpson, Beavis and Butthead who I DO love and Spongebob Squarepants be where it be at for TV GUIDE today..eps.with so much time passed..

GMBB came out in the 50s from a new animation co. called UPA, created by a group of rebellious Disney veterans who wanted to make more creative animation, he was the first of the symplified style animated characters ( think Powerpuff girls for a modern version of this style ). It was written by Dr Seuss! :happyface
