My cat seems to have developed a very annoying habit that is driving me crazy and I don't know how to cure it and I would love some advice that can be helpful. We also don't let our cat socialize with other cats because he might get sick or hurt. Another thing he does is nibble on Mom's legs when she is sleeping and play real rough but he don't bite. I have 3 female indoor cats and 2 will howl late at night like yours. With mine it's usually during or after their heat cycle. The other cat so far hasn't done any howling. Since we're talking about weird cat behavior, my calico will make sounds like a pigeon when she's in heat. I need to get it on video because it's hysterical when she does it. :brent

Oh goodness, when my daughter left our household at 18 or so, I vowed never to be responsible for another animal.

How old is the cat ? If he is a young cat it could just be that he needs to get neutered ! If he has been neutered already, and esp.if he is an older cat could be something wrong with him. He might be sick or in pain! :( You should take him to the vet as soon as possible ! ;)

I know the times are approximate but that's 16 hours of yowling and meowing. That's a lot for any cat, if only because indoor kitties sleep a lot.

Yes, for sure ! Right now I don't have a cat, but as a child my family always had cats ! And I had a few after leaving my family home and also I have friends who have cats , so I am familiar with them ! It kinda seems like something might really he wrong healthwise with this poor kitty! :(

I did check if my cat is in pain but Mom and I checked and my cat is very fine and has no pain whatsoever but we still can't figure out what is causing my cat to yowl and meow really loud. And another thing my cat has started to do is that ever since Mom gave me our old recliner to put in my room anytime I eat breakfast or dinner my cat will jump on top of the recliner and stares at me and I dread one day he will land on my head and cause injury to me but if I get off the recliner he yowls at me but if he gets spooked "which some sounds spook my cat" he leaps like a panther onto the recliner and yowls. I dread one day that a leap like that might break my cat's legs

How do you know for sure the cat has no pain? Unless you take it to the vet as suggested you don't. How old is he? Have you checked his teeth and gums? Is he active like most any indoor cats such as running through the house chasing laser lights, jumping on furniture, destroying window blinds, making biscuits etc.? 2 of my cats started howling a few weeks ago about 7am and when I went to check their food & water both bowls had been emptied overnight by a game of chase the cat. After cleaning it up and replenishing the bowls the howling stopped for that day. A few months ago my gray tabby developed an irregular heartbeat. She became sluggish and lost all interest in any kind of running or playing. I took her to the vet and after that along with the meds she was back to her usual self. So unless your cat told you himself he was in no pain then I concur with the others and suggest you take him to the vet.

I agree completely with you, Bonnie. Sounds like this pet owner doesn't deserve to even have a pet seeing as how he/she refuses to take this poor cat to the vet. And he/she still has not said if the cat has even been neutered. It is very apparent that this cat owner doesn't have a clue. When someone adopts a pet, they assume responsibility for it and it is PAINFULLY obvious that this poor cat is in need of a visit to the vet.

I've only had one cat, a male siamese, and he would act that way wherever the neighbor's female cat was in heat. I guess there was just something in the air, and he was trying to "call out" hoping she would find him?

This was never a problem during the winter months when the houses were sealed up tight. but after the screens were installed, it was a monthly bit. He particularly enjoyed going right up to a screened window and bellowing out to the world. For anyone who is familiar with Siamese.....they know the yeowl that I'm talking about.

I agree, did the cat tell you he/she is in no pain. Vets can't even be sure of t this one..

My daughter just had to put down their 15 yr old doggie due to advancing Sundowners, dementia. She didn't seem to be in a lot of pain, but who knows, but she sure was so lost with t his disease.

Now do cats end up with dementia...and I didn't read how old this cat is and maybe I missed that one...

Pheromones. I've previously read studies that suggest certain animals can "smell" in 3D. Meaning they can accurately guage how far away a source is, based upon the strength of the scent.

In the case of my Siamese, my next door neighbor had a female Siamese, and the proximity was driving him insane

I suspect this will ruffle some feathers, but in the case of my siamese, his bellowing would at times become majorly annoying. He'd just climb into a window, and howl for 5-10 minutes at a time...take a short break, and then resume.

So, a couple times I rolled up a newspaper, snuck up behind him, and just swatted the window sill beside him (never actually making contact).

After a short time, I no longer even had to get up out of my chair, I could just pick up a magazine and make a rustling sound, and kitty knew to cool it.

Many animals end up with loose screws just like humans. One of the cats my daughter had long ago, was very pretty but a horrible disposition, would bite the hands that fed it.....

All we know is that this is a new behavior and the cat is a male. We don't know how old the cat is, how long they have had him, or whether he is neutered.

Early on Wawwie said she had this situation and the cat was neutered--that solved it. So, vet visit. If this is an older cat whose behavior suddenly changed, he needs a vet visit.

I agree, some animals are trouble from the get-go--my parents had a cat named Girl-Girl when I was a baby, and she hissed and growled at everyone--she was always this way.

But this is a sudden change in behavior. It needs attention--the cat needs to be examined.

I believe there are clinics and agencies that would help if finances are an issue.

I was raised with outside cats around our big family apt bldg and dogs/doghouses...

Well, what actually cured the "problem" with my Siamese, is we just started putting him outside at 11 PM, and after that we were fine.
Oh, he'd have a pile of dead mice on the back porch some mornings...some times rats (we lived on a river).....but overall the freedom made him a much happier kitty. We just wouldn't put him out in the spring (nesting birds) or in the winter.

Some mornings he'd come back pretty banged up...somewhere along the line he learned to not mess with raccoons....but he was a much more at ease housemate once we started letting him out to expend his excess energies.

The paradox is, I just about have to have one foot in the grave, before I'll go see a doctor personally, My German shepherd lived to be 14 without a vet, until I took him in to get him put down, with arthritis, and my Siamese cat was strong as an ox and never saw a vet.... So it's hard to justify a vet unless there is tangible evidence that treatment is necessary. I seriously suspect if they take this cat into the vet, the "cure" will be to have the animal neutered.
If the owner cant see that for themself, then maybe a trip to the vet in order to be told the obvious might be desirable?

I think the only time I ever took a pet to the vet was a hamster with an eye infection (lol. I was 40 years old with a pet hamster)...and the vet was asking "you sure that you want to spend this money on a hamster?"

And I was like "of course! I love this little guy" .

But there was evidence there was an organic problem to be cured. So it seemed justified.

LOL, maybe a nice, expensive course of therapy, combined with a scrip for kitty tranquilizers...get the cat strung out on darvons....

GJ: Funny on the hamster, my grandkids had a hamster, and the boy had a creepy lizard at one point, and none of them want a cat in their lives NOW....they are a dog family and got a new Shiba Inyu since their 15 yr old had to be put down not long ago.

Me: a bf and I owned a couple of parakeets for a short time but found a home for them,
they were not going to work in our lives.

And running to a doc now in my life, does not happen....I do my own healing all I can when I can and when needed....Too bad I can't undo a botched hip replacement....

Hi, I don't have anyone on the Ignore List, I just don't think they should be able to attack others and not be somewhat attacked back. Believe me I've had more than my share here.

Some are certainly wild and wooley and very disrespectful of others. But they love to try to turn it around and put the blame on the person being attacked....not even passive/aggressive, pure aggression.

Mom and I did try to control my cat's yowling in the mornings and we found that he LOVES Kern's Mango Nectar and if Mom gives him some Kern's Mango Nectar after I drink some he licks the cup and it makes him a happy camper and keeps him quiet at least for a while but he will yowl again at breakfast and Mom gives him leftover milk from my cereal and that seems to cure him. By the way my cat just turned 5 on Mother's Day because he actually was born when my mom was cleaning the house and she heard little mewing sounds and sure enough my cat was born because the mother cat had her babies in the family room in our old house and he's been with me ever since and he was Mom's Mother's Day gift

So, 5 years old, and this just started? I'd keep an eye on him paying particular attention to if this becomes a pattern, or a cycle. Of course I'm sure if it became apparent that misery was a part of it, you would take it to a vet.

Well, just being honest. There are 2 sides to every coin. It's extremely challenging to try to believe that you don't know that your behavior is irritating, and that makes it appear as though it is intentional.

That's probably why the moderators just look the other way when you are targeted with behavior that clearly is against the rules. Every online community has a "good ol' boy" network, and you have done a stellar job of aligning this one against you.

And, good ol boy networks tend to learn well just how much they can get away with, how long their dear old friends will look the other way while they get in a few quick jabs with no consequence, and it only starts looking like a fight once the target responds in kind.
