Mary was great. But after TMTMS, Did Betty White due to the Golden Girls and her lengthy long life and later career status. Did she become a bigger star than Mary?

Unpopular opinion: Yes, BW definitely "starred" in more shows and productions.

Apparently she returned to TV in her own series: Mary (1985). Obviously, the show didn't work for her fans.

After that she was in small parts here and there. I don't think starring in TV Movies is top of hill after being a top notch star in two tv smash hits.

Did MTM become a recluse or was she "difficult" to work with?

Her health wasn't optimal. I believe she was diagnosed with diabetes before the Mary Tyler Moore Show went off the air.

To be honest, yes. Betty came back with the smash The Golden Girls and another smash Hot in Cleveland.

Mary Tyler Moore had achieved "icon" status, and as such she received a lot of credit for things that others did. Over time that fades, and the person's seen in better perspective. Betty White's in that icon category now, and it'll take a while to figure out just where she stands.

My guess is that as time passes, it'll be recognized that what MTM did fronting her own show was more difficult and important than the things Betty White did as part of an ensemble.

great points

I'm thinking Betty Whites legacy outdid Mary's.

Reason being my 16 year old daughter loved Betty White and all the 20 year olds at work made a big deal when Betty passed......Mary did not get that later in life and as a legacy.

I bet most people 50 years and younger dont know Mary or realize Mary's tv importance.
