Rider Strong's response to being part of one of the first interracial couples on a family show (https://www.lipstickalley.com/threads/rider-strongs-response-to-being-part-of-one-of-the-first-interracial-couples-on-a-family-show.4941314/)

For those that can't see the TikTok video, he said:

They brought in a couple different actresses for me to read with & none of them were white. So that was always a conscious choice on the writers' part because our show is so white. You can look at it as like 'Oh, she was the token black character', but the result of that was our writers had to hire a black female writer. We ended up being one of the few shows that had a black writer, let alone a female black writer. We did have conversations, 'Do we address it? Do we talk about it?' If you can dig it up, Trina wrote an editorial in the LA Times. She was on the side of not talking about it & not addressing race because she felt like we were a model for a younger generation that might be hopefully more color blind. You know, we had debates & I still--I'm a little on the fence about it, but the reality is that people love the character & they love the love story & that's what mattered.
