View Full Version : Why did the writers seem to have such an axe to grind against Mary

Especially after Jessica Biel posed provocatively (https://medium.com/atta-girl/mary-camden-is-my-hero-455b07314268) for a men's magazine in a seemingly transparent attempt to get herself fired. From that point on (https://www.beliefnet.com/columnists/idolchatter/2007/05/what-is-legacy-of-7th-heaven.html), Mary's character (https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Characters/SeventhHeaven) devolved (https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/YMMV/SeventhHeaven) from being a mature and responsible teen who sometimes rebelled but ended up doing the right thing to being (https://web.archive.org/web/20061031124318/http://www.jumptheshark.com/s/7thheaven.htm) a dysfunctional, selfish mess (https://www.fanforum.com/f42/marys-downward-spiral-unappreciation-thread-college-isnt-everyone-43242/). Furthermore, she was dishonorably written off due to being kicked out of her home to live with relatives (https://screenrant.com/7th-heaven-no-sense-things/) because of her bad behavior (https://thedipp.com/tv-news/which-camden-child-was-the-worst-on-7th-heaven). To add insult to injury, even when Mary comes back, she's an airhead who can't get things right.

To me, if anyone had an ax to grind it was Jessica.

God bless you and her always!!!

I had also, posted in the Cosby Show forum (https://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/showthread.php?t=412782) about how that particular series, did its own version of "character assassination"/"character derailment" with Denise Huxtable (played Lisa Bonet). I attempted to compare that scenario to the one that Jessica Biel later faced as Mary Camden on 7th Heaven:
Meanwhile, Mary (https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Characters/SeventhHeaven) on 7th Heaven, started off as being a mature and responsible teen who sometimes rebelled but ended up doing the right thing. But after Jessica Biel posed (https://web.archive.org/web/20140401071852/http://forums.televisionwithoutpity.com/topic/3127454-7th-heaven-there-is-no-god/page-315#entry15273390) provocatively for a men's magazine, her character devolved (https://www.datalounge.com/thread/30616895-tina-yothers-ruined-family-ties-) into being a dysfunctional, selfish mess, who got dishonorably written off due to being kicked out of her home to live with relatives because of her bad behavior. And when even when Mary comes back, she's now an airhead who can't get things right.
