View Full Version : Ward's burgers

I always thought Ward would be a good outdoor grilling cook.
He pretty much was in charge of those duties in the Cleaver house.
All ingredients basic, nothing extravagant. But very tasty.

Thought of Ward's burgers watching fast food reviews on YouTube. Still some reasonably priced. But $10 burgers seems the rage with pop-ups, combos, ghost restaurants.

Watching the calories. I'd preorder a turkey burger from Ward.

This guy is quite entertaining.

Gee whiz! I don't even think the Rockefellers or the Kennedys wore suits and ties and formal dresses (with white gloves) to an outdoor barbecue.

Found this pretty funny when Sue Randall says she's tingly and the guy says I know what you mean.

Why don't I find their dining in suits and dresses odd? I don't see them at a barbeque, I see them eating grilled food. Hmm, I must have lived a sheltered life.

I never made the connection I guess of Beaver taking Miss Landers ever so gently by her elbow and escorting her...to a picnic table. I am laughing now.

June to Miss Landers, "We're barbecuing tonight".

Barbecue- A meal or gathering at which meat, fish, or other food is cooked out of doors on a rack over an open fire or on a portable grill.

June to Miss Landers, "We're barbecuing tonight".

Does June say this after Miss Landers shows up? If she called Miss Landers and told her they were barbecuing, then I would say they were all too dressed.

Barbequing is not the most common way of meal prep when having important guests come over for the first time (more important than Larry anyways).

Usually, you would sit at the dining room table for your first get-together, and then the clothing they are all wearing is appropriate.

I cannot imagine being invited to dinner without the hostess giving more details regarding dining and dress arrangements. The whole thing is getting odder and odder. I wonder if this is meant to be a goofy thing or if it's a true oversight?

June tells Miss Landers "We're barbecuing" as she arrives. When June calls the school they break away without hearing the 2 talk. Another example of June's airheadedness. Think, she'd tell ML ahead of time it's a barbecue and dress casual.

Looked on Dailymotion didn't see any difference in ML attire in the episode.

The funny classic episode has some areas its unnaturally stiff. Ward no barbecue apron while grilling in a white shirt. No bibs allowed at the table eating with suit, tie, white shirt. Not once do the 4 boys mention how beautiful ML is among themselves. But, for how stiff it is in these areas Sue Randall wears a very sexy, provocative dress to the Cleavers for dinner.

Makes me think of a "Candid Camera" bit where an attractive substitute teacher talks and everyone is behaved. Then the teacher walks out for a minute and the kids are hootin' & hollerin' how attactive the substitute is.

I am really blank on this episode other than:

Bever being freaked out about the way the family will act toward Miss Landers.
Beaver freaking out because Miss Landers is wearing too revealing of a dress for dinner with a student.
How the boys in the trees were talking about being able to see her toes and wanting their money back.

With all that said, do we see Ward at the barbeque actually tending the food? I know there were some ranges even back then that allowed you to grill right on the stove so if that is true...

I have to think this was written on purpose to poke fun.

I cracked up when Beaver said, "This is my brother Wally. He's a sophomore in high school and he took a bath."

Also funny when Wally tried to make small talk by asking if so-and-so president was to only one to be impeached.

One thing I noticed outside was the improbability of three boys (particularly with Larry being one of them) finding a single tree branch that would hold all of them.

And yes June really goofed things up. Also by impulsively inviting ML that night for dinner without even telling Beaver. So she didn't think of the fact that ML would mention to him later, and he would be clueless? Geneally, I think it's really odd to invite someone to dinner the same day.

Miss Landers' dress is what 2 weeks salary? Or does she have a sugar daddy? She's then asked to sit on a possibly splintery wooden picnic table bench? Also the Cleaver boys drink milk with steak? That's more water, or pop in my world as a kid?

I chuckled then too. Despite being older than Beaver, it seems like he still viewed Ms Landers as somewhat of an authority figure even in a social situation, and I guess he figured he was being suave or smooth by sort of "talking shop" with her.

Beaver's comment about Wally having just taken a bath was bizarre.

I noted that, and not just this but many other episodes. It's like June thought her sons would whither away and die if they consumed any other beverage than milk.

From my time growing up, I noticed that one set of my cousin's parents, and one of my friend's parents were fairly strict about their kid's dietary habits and it was all milk, all the time ( except some water ). In our house, and in most other's home's I've been in were more laid back, beverage wise. Lunch, dinner was washed down with iced tea, any number of types of juice, Koolade, and even soda.

That one friend of mine when he ate dinner with us was quite surprised and told me "Wow, your mother lets you have soda with dinner!!??".

How about the episode when Wally and the Beaver are home alone and Wally cooks dinner for both of them? Wally cooks hamburgers for them, opens a large bag of potato chips for a side dish, and then pours two glasses of milk to drink. Milk and potato chips? Yuck! Why not have Neapolitan ice cream topped with mustard and sauerkraut for dessert?

In another LITB episode, Ward comes home from work and quenches his thirst with a glass of whole milk. Let me ask you, how many dads across America do you think downed a glass of milk right after they just got home from a tough day at the office or from eight hours of hard physical labor back during the late 1950s or early 1960s? I think they’d be far more likely to down a cold Bud than a glass of Elsie-the-cow’s milk.

But, knowing how much of a square Ward was, he probably also ate Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes or Sugar Pops with Wally and the Beaver for breakfast every morning.

He's too old to be blurting that out with company (5 yes, 10 no), but the comedy took precedence. He and Wally had had a back and forth about it in their bedroom, and Wally relented and took one. But I think most kids that old would stifle that in polite company, or be told later about it.

I was around Beaver's age, and in warmer weather we'd eat on the porch and it was always fresh brewed iced tea to drink, sweetened with that evil saccharin. But I do remember sometimes drinking milk with meals at other times, but it had to be really cold.

My dad? On cereal only.

The milk was delivered in bottles by Locust Lane dairy in South Jersey, by somebody known as the milkman. The bottles were returned to them and reused. You might say we were more environmentally conscious then, than now. We just didn't know it.

My mom said they drank coffee as kids because milk was too pricey. I imagine that was common in the 20-30s.

What age would June let her angels drink coffee in the morning? Wally was what 17-18 at the series end and no evil coffee yet.

If Ward ever wanted a beer bs-ing with the guys after golf, or at Mayfield's pro team game with the boys would he have to call June at home for permission?

I don't remember the Cleavers having orange juice for breakfast's drink. Boys always milk. W & J coffee. That's very unrealistic.

Sgt. Saunders

Yes, I could definitely see Ward phoning June to see if it was okay with her if he had a beer with Fred Rutherford and the boys at the country club.

I forgot just how Ward and June got that bottle of liqueur, that the naive Beaver later gave to the dipsomaniacal Andy Hadlock to enjoy. If there was any of that bottle left, maybe “Mr. Jeff,” the hobo Beaver let into the Cleaver home, might have downed the rest of the booze as he was taking a bath in Ward and June’s bathtub?

I always wonder how “delighted” June must have been to have to pick up and dispose of “Mr. Jeff’s”absolutely filthy old clothes he left on her bathroom floor. And, then having to scour her bathtub with industrial-strength bleach after “Mr. Jeff” had planted his filthy carcass in her own bathtub.

Of course, Ward must have also been absolutely “delighted” that “Mr. Jeff” had “borrowed” probably Ward’s best suit, dress shirt, tie, shoes and also Ward’s favorite pair of Frederick’s of Hollywood For Men Underwear.

The constant milk drinking is my favorite thing to nitpick about the show. They'd pour a huge glass of it, take one sip, and pour the rest of it down the drain! I don't think cows could keep up with all the milk consumed and wasted in The Cleaver household.

I wonder how the scrupulously-hygienic June Cleaver would cope with the COVID pandemic today? Would she clean off all of the food products that were brought into the house? Would she make Ward and the boys disrobe in the garage, throw their street clothes in the washer, put on bathrobes before all of them took long, hot showers and, then, putting on clean clothes and donning surgical masks before dinner?

No doubt, Eddie, Lumpy, Larry, Gilbert, etc., would all be personas non grata at the Cleaver household. Would June become bummed out, what with Ward working from home and the boys attending class via zoom lectures?

And, I guess visits by Aunt Martha, Uncle Billy and the Rutherfords or the Haskells would also be out of the question.

I don’t know how even the unfailingly chipper and upbeat June Cleaver could maintain her equanimity and self-possession in the face of the intrusive lockdown we all have just endured for so long? As Tony Soprano and his business associates were fond of saying, “What are you going to do?”

That would have been a great cross-over episode of LITB and “Fawlty Towers,” with the Cleaver family visiting England along with Eddie Haskell and Larry Mondello.

How would Fawlty Towers owner and manager Basil Fawlty react to having an all-American family like the Cleavers as guests at his hotel? Maybe Basil would mistakenly believe that Ward was the CEO for a major US corporation like GE or IBM and act as sycophantically with Ward as Basil did with “Lord”Melbury?

Would Eddie Haskell cause trouble once again with his knowledge of the Spanish language by causing a contretemps with the amiable Fawlty Towers bellboy, Manuel of Barcelona?

Would Larry Mondello get a particularly bad case of “agita” from eating too many kippers and other British delicacies?

Would driving on the other side of the road cause much confusion and trouble for Wally and Eddie as they drove around the picturesque seaside town of Torquay, England?

And, would Basil and Sybil Fawlty enjoy themselves if they ever visited Mayfield, USA? Would Basil find the food and ambiance at The White Fox as outstanding as the cuisine and atmosphere at Fawlty Towers’ dining room?

Would Basil find Fred Rutherford and Gus-the-Fireman as witty and engaging as longtime Fawlty Towers resident-guest, The Major?

Oh, the possibilities for Anglo/American fun and confusion would be endless if the Cleavers and the Fawltys ever crossed paths.

LITB could of done some crossovers with US shows too. Putting the prim & proper Cleavers dealing with "Arnold the Pig" on Green Acres, "Otis the Drunk" on TAGS, "Granny" on the The Beverly Hillbillies.

The Cleavers prim & proper act was an untapped goldmine to be played off of.

Wonder if Jerry Mathers ever thought about a Beaver followup show in the 60s taking a more zanier, self-deprecating angle.

How about the Cleaver family visiting the greater NYC area? I would have loved to have seen them all dining at the ritzy Nuevo Vesuvio, owned and run by Charmaine Bucco and her husband, Nuevo Vesuvio’s expert and convivial chef, Artie.

No doubt, Eddie and Lumpy would have enjoyed chilling out at the Bada Bing on Route 17 South, in beautiful Lodi, NJ. (Maybe Wally, not so much.)

Beaver and Larry would enjoy the vast number of ice cream sodas and sundaes available at Holsten’s Ice Cream Shop in Bloomfield, NJ (I hope they also tried the delicious onion rings at Holsten’s. Tony Soprano swears by them.)

Personally, I think Uncle Billy and Uncle “Junior” Soprano would have hit it off tremendously. I can just see them, having everyone in stitches with all of their amusing anecdotes and hilarious jokes. However, the prim and proper June might not care for Billy and Junior’s irreverent senses of humor. And, don’t get me started on how Aunt Martha would react to a comedy performance by “Cleaver & Soprano.”

My Three Sons drank a lot of milk. I am not sure they had anything but milk. One of them broke their leg and they had to drink even more milk.

Oftentimes on My Three Sons, they would pull an uncovered glass pitcher of milk out of the refrigerator. Containing maybe a half-gallon or so.

The Douglas Family was like mine in having milk deliveries, still common in the '60s and very early '70s. When groceries were brought in at times on M3S, I don't recall inclusion of any containers of milk; no doubt it was delivered. By way of trivia, Dick Sargent played a milkman on his episode of Fedderson's The Millionaire.
