Does Andy have a wife at all in the show?? If so, who was she, who played her, and why do we never see her? Thanks.

Even in the pilot, Andy's wife has been dead for some time. That is all we ever learn about her. She is barely mentioned after that. We never learn her name.

I recently watched the episode where Barney and Andy discuss the fact that it's Barney's tenth anniversary as deputy, having begun the job in 1953.

That would mean that Andy became sheriff some time before that, perhaps as early as the late 1940s.

So Barney was definitely around when Andy married and when his wife passed away.

All I can think is that her death was possibly pretty traumatic, the way everyone avoids talking about it.
