Why did Charlotte Rae leave the show?

There were several reasons:

She had a heart issue which was troubling her

She felt as though the girls didn't need her anymore, and her role had shrunk

The show had definitely changed, and it was no longer even a Norman Lear property.

The real reason Charlotte left was because she demanded the show bring back Sue Ann, Cindy, Molly, and Nancy, and when they wouldn't she destroyed her dressing room and left the studio without looking back.

I think part of it was because originally it was her show and years later her role was much smaller. She knew when it was right to move on.

It was multiple reasons.

Her contract also expired and she decided not to renew.
