Even if Archie had somehow found the means to earn his own way, I can imagine he'd have easily called other residents 'hicks', 'country bumpkins', 'yahoos', etc. IOW, he'd NEVER find a place where he wouldn't find someone or something to dis because he's a bit of a malcontent.

He might have to find other employment.... wasn't he raised on a farm and his dad a farmer? Or I might be thinking about James Evans from Good Times.... But I suppose Archie could find factory work, they are all over the place.

Well, first of all, these days there are a LOT more long haired men in rural areas than in the early 1970's but many of them are conservative. IOW, if Archie were around now he would probably like hearing what they'd have to say- until he got a look at their appearances then would write them off (somewhat like he did that French-accented Black hospital roommate).

He implied Edith's love of 'The Waltons' was being naive and childish on her part so I don't see him embracing rural settings or their inhabitants.

As I said, he was a bit of a malcontent who'd find things to dis because he truly couldn't be content ANYwhere- not unlike James Evans, Sr. on 'Good Times'.

I thought part of a good ABP series finale would have had Archie selling the bar and moving to Fox Ridge to be closer to Gloria. Of course Stephanie would have objected at first but she would have come around when she realized it was her chance to be a big sister to Joey the way Billie had been to her.

I have to rewatch this series and see if there was any hint that Archie was planning on selling the bar or moving in season 3 or 4. I mean how much longer would it have lasted if it was renewed after 82-83?

No. Archie was a “big city guy”. However in one episode I watched recently he wanted to move to Southern California (I guess in 1973 it was affordable then) but they didn’t go.

As a disclaimer, I don’t know New York City but each neighborhood was like their own town within the Burroughs. Supermarkets, bars, what have you was right there (Archie leaving the house to go to Kelsey’s “for a beer”. He walked there. So not all of NYC was huge buildings and millions of people crowded around. Bunker knew his neighbors. He lives in an enclosed area and he would have been bored with country life.

And also, the country people may not have accepted him either as an outsider.
