Why We Think Billy Was The Worst Character

Fans of Melrose Place (https://web.archive.org/web/20061031120931/http://www.jumptheshark.com/m/melroseplace.htm) would probably agree that there were other characters on the show who were less likable than Billy (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Melrose_Place_characters#Billy_Campbell). However, we still feel like he was the worst character (https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Characters/MelrosePlace) on the show. For starters, his relationship with Alison was dragged out a little bit too long. The back and forth nature of the situation was downright annoying and it made him very one-dimensional. Even in his other relationships, Billy’s behavior was always immature and sometimes downright difficult to watch. At the beginning of the series, Billy seemed like a great character, but by the end of season two, it was clear that there probably wasn’t a lot to his story arc. Meanwhile, lots of other characters on the show seemed to get better as the series went on.

Billy’s character probably had lots of potential to be great, but it seems like too much time was spent focusing on him in the context of romantic relationships. On top of that, Billy dated his ex’s best friend which we all know is one of the slimiest moves a person could make. As a result, he wasn’t as developed as he probably could’ve been. If we would’ve gotten the chance to see more sides of Billy, we likely would’ve felt differently about his character overall. Realistically, though, there were so many characters on Melrose Place (https://web.archive.org/web/20140330003202/http://forums.televisionwithoutpity.com/topic/2527296-melrose-place/?view=getnewpost) that it wasn’t really possible for writers to fully flesh all of them out. As a result, characters like Billy kind of fell to the wayside.

Nah. As for the guys on the show, I'd say Jake was worse than Billy. They really played into the stereotype of the over-the-top masculine tough guy and that wasn't it for me. I realize it was still the 90's so gender roles were completely separate and well-defined to be that way but Jake was just boring to me.

For the gals, Amanda was definitely the dumbest. What woman marries a guy who literally tried to kill her? The only reason she lived was because Michael kicked Peter's butt in the OR. Michael saved her life and she has the nerve to tell him "I'm alive because a team of medical professionals saved me." Hey, bimbo, those medical professionals would never have had the chance to save you if not for MICHAEL. Sure, Michael can be a douche, but he was a true hero in this situation and Amanda treats him like crap instead of thanking him. I can't stand that woman. Allison also sucked. She was a super mean drunk and she was selfish as hell.

So for the guys, I think Peter was the worst. For the gals, it's a tie between Amanda and Allison IMO.

I was just reading comments elsewhere about Andrew Shue. While Melrose Place wasn't really known for great acting, he may have been the worst of the main cast members. He really had very little experience or training before and really showed.

Andrew just sort of fell into acting and got really lucky. He was a college soccer player who Aaron Spelling randomly spotted and gave the gig on Melrose Place to. He wasn't even interested in acting at that point.

He eventually quit acting and eventually founded DoSomething.
