View Full Version : There never should have been a Reboot

I was so excited about the Reboot in 2018. I couldn't wait. I was a teenager in the 1990s, and bringing the show back was going to bring part of my childhood back. I remember watching the first Reboot episode. On Facebook, most of my friends' statuses said "watching Roseanne". I looked forward to each week. New episodes for the first time in 20 years! Then it all came to a screeching halt with all of the ridiculousness surrounding Roseanne's tweet.

Now, unfortunately, the whole legacy of the show has been tarnished. I don't see the other actors in the way I used to because they all threw Roseanne under the bus. None of them stood up for her. The only ones who could have had solid careers on their own are John Goodman and Laurie Metcalf. As for the others, they would be nothing without Roseanne. They haven't done anything outside of "Roseanne". They owe all of their fame and success to her. I used to love Sara Gilbert. She was so funny as Darlene back in the '90s. Now I can't stand her. I have never watched "The Connors" and never will.

That said, even before Roseanne's unfortunate tweet, something felt off about the Reboot. Even though I was enjoying the episodes each week, something just felt off. In many ways, the Reboot was depressing. I hated that they made Becky such a loser. Becky always said that she didn't want to end up like Dan and Roseanne, but she ended up worse than them. Dan and Roseanne at least had their own place and didn't have to live in their parents' basement. Also, the cracks about Becky's age weren't funny. She was still young. No, 40 isn't 20, but you're hardly over the hill. Of course maybe they were referring to the fact that Becky had accomplished absolutely nothing from 20 to 40 and had essentially wasted 20 years. Darlene was also not very successful. She had to move back in with Dan and Roseanne, something the teenage Darlene always said would never happen. I also hated that they made David a deadbeat dad. This went totally against his character.

It was also depressing that Dan and Roseanne were portrayed as being old. They were in their 60s, not their 80s. These days 60s is not that old. They were on numerous pills and acting like they were ready for the nursing home. Roseanne's mother and even grandmother weren't portrayed this way in the original series. Another thing that was wrong with the Reboot was that it was so political. Too much talk about politics. The original managed to touch on social issues without being political. For whatever reason this show just didn't work in the modern era. It should have stayed in the 1990s. The 1990s were a much different time, and we can't go back. I wish that they had never attempted a comeback because it has now just tarnished the original.

I think season 9 tarnished the show more than anything else could. Season 10 was decent but not the best. I think The Conners is way better than anything Roseanne has since s6

Everything you have stated Julie,I agree 100% the original was great including season 6 and on. Unlike some other fans I still see all 8 seasons of Roseanne as canon. The conners is just some weird AU fanfic from the mind of helford and whatever writers they have.

I have seen some actual Roseanne fanfics that are better than whatever the conners come up with. Fans who take into consideration the entire history of the show unlike the conners. All the retconning the conners have done just killed it for me. Rather rewatch Roseanne over and over again than rewatch the conners.

Wow, julietx, excellent post!
Your analysis is lucid and I think you are right on all the issues.
Especially the one about Dan and Roseanne being portrayed too old, of I didn't think too much about it before.

As for Darlene and Becky's failures, I think it is a common thing in the remakes, and it has more to do with current society rather than the writers getting the characters wrong.
Many of the promises we grew up with as children and teenagers in the 90s didn't turn true, and our conditions worsened.
Many of our generation didn't manage to achieve and are still struggling; at least the majority is, and also I am.

I think that they just wanted to make the characters connected to the audience.
Same thing happened in the revival of Gilmore Girls: we all expected a bright future for Rory Gilmore...

Anyway I'm happy with this reboot.
It gave me what I want from a sitcom: moments of happines, comfort and encouragement.
And a fantastic Lecy Goranson.
