There were a few “musts”. Obviously Aladdin had to be here. Same with Unforgiven. Top grossers like The Bodyguard, Basic Instinct, Batman Returns, A Few Good Men, Bram Stoker’s Dracula and Wayne’s World seemed essential. The Home Alone and Lethal Weapon sequels were on the bubble. Based on pairings, Macaulay Culkin made the cut while Mel Gibson didn’t.
Looking at the Oscars I felt like most of the Best Picture nominees should be included. I’m not a huge fan of Scent of a Woman, but it won Al Pacino his Oscar so it kind of had to be there. As a Merchant Ivory production, Howard’s End was on the bubble. Since no one requested it, I gave its spot to Malcolm X instead. And of course there was no way I could overlook Marisa Tomei’s controversial Oscar win for My Cousin Vinny.
Certain movies were too culturally significant to ignore. In 1992 everyone was buzzing about the secret of The Crying Game. Reservoir Dogs marked the directorial debut of Quentin Tarantino. And I know a lot of people are fans of Michael Mann’s The Last of the Mohicans. Glengary Glen Ross is just necessary. And while it was regarded as a bit of a disappointment at the time, I felt like Boomerang should be included. A League of Their Own revived Tom Hanks’ career and The Mighty Ducks launched an unlikely franchise.
Originally I passed on the ensemble heist movie Sneakers. But readers requested it by name. One False Move wasn’t even on my radar, but I made room for it after a couple of mentions in the comments. Death Becomes Her, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Singles, Single White Female, Under Siege and The Bad Lieutenant all owe their inclusion in the game to requests from Le Bloggers.
Those inclusions left no room for Robert Downey Jr. as Chaplin. The Hand That Rocks the Cradle was largely a victim of me wanting to pair Singles against Single White Female. Otherwise, I might have found room for the thriller. Far and Away and Patriot Games were big movies no one really cares about all that much anymore. I fully expected to include them in the game but their slots went to reader-requested movies instead. My apologies to anyone who really wanted a Tom Cruise bracket.
Other “on-the-bubble” movies included Newsies, Encino Man, Universal Soldier and Honeymoon in Vegas. Even Alien 3 could have been been included. While I don’t think 1992 was a great year, it had more than its share of base hits.
