SEASON SEVEN
Up to this point, the creators mainly stuck to a fairly straightforward home renovation theme with moments of silliness or absurdity. After all, Home Improvement was a simple sitcom about a quirky, all-American family. This season, however, the production team for the opening credits must have been given full creative freedom after knocking it out of the park three times already.
Season seven’s opening credits begin in typical fashion, with the house being assembled in a collage animation. Tim “the Tool Man” Taylor appears on screen with a remote control. It would be a logical conclusion to assume that the remote is for the vehicle he was controlling in the previous season or some other funny gadget. That assumption would be utterly wrong.
This remote control produces a crate that appears from behind Tim and boxes him up inside. It twists and transforms into a steampunk cube that imprisons the Tool Man. The machine bounces to the ground and transforms again into a metallic sphere that launches into the atmosphere. Tim is now at the mercy of gravity itself as he, in the sphere, plummets back down to the Earth at terminal velocity.
The sphere lands with a bounce in the yard next to Jill, who is out watering the plants in a smart pantsuit. The sphere has once again transformed, this time into a terracotta pot. Jill sees nothing unusual about this and begins to water it. Immediately, a writhing sunflower with Tim’s face sprouts out of the pot. Tim Taylor is reborn, and we return to the reality that this is an opening credit sequence for a beloved sitcom.
Having expended so much creativity on all of this insanity, which all occurs in only fifteen seconds, the audience is given the most generic cast introduction shots we’ve seen in any of the Home Improvement credits thus far. The one standout part about it is the inclusion of Heidi (Debbie Dunning).
