Who knew that wet suits existed in the 1800s.

I believe these wore worn (under the 19th century prairie clothes) by Laura and Nellie during the Ingalls/Oleson's camping episode when they 'fell' into the raging river and nearly drowned. Miss Arngrim would report that the suits worked fine keeping them warm for a while but eventually the icy cold river started numbing the young performers' feet during the lengthy shooting of the scenes. She was unsure how to deal with that but Miss Gilbert came up with the idea of them slowly releasing their bladders to keep warm- and, although Miss Arngrim initially objected, she DID wind up 'overcoming 15 years of toilet training' and following suit to keep her feet from getting totally numb.
Speaking of suits. ..in spite of this having happened underwater, wardrobe DID notice what they'd done after the fact. Anyway, after a few 'discussions' with ML ,etc. the producers decided to NEVER delay the casts' bathroom breaks again no matter how tricky it would have been to have taken off/redress the attire afterward!
