CARLSBAD, California – Peter Robbins of Carlsbad, the voice actor who brought Charlie Brown to life in the 1960s Peanuts cartoons, has died, his family told FOX 5. He was 65 years old.

Robbins’ family said he took his life last week.

FOX 5’s Phil Blauer has been a close friend of the voice actor for the past 25 years. He says he had closely followed the voice actor’s ups and downs, ranging from interviewing him in prison because of criminal threats he made against several people, including Sheriff Bill Gore of San Diego County, to talking to him when he was on rehab and struggling with a drug addiction. and alcohol.

Despite all the darkness, he still clung to his childhood hero.

Robbins began expressing Charlie Brown in 1963 and also in several more peanuts cartoons. He adored the character so much that he had a tattoo of Charlie Brown and Snoopy on his arm.

The last time FOX 5 interviewed him was in 2019, when he just got out of jail and talked about his lifelong battle with mental illness.

“I would recommend anyone who has bipolar disorder to take it seriously because your life can turn around in a month, just like it did for me,” Robbins said. “I got out of jail and I’m a better person for it. I’m much more humble and grateful and grateful that I went through the experience.”

Robbins’ loved ones are asking for privacy in this difficult time. They say they will hold a memorial service for him at a later date.

Blauer says he sincerely wishes he could have done more for his dear friend.

“I will always appreciate his nickname for him,” Blauer said. “He used to call me ‘Scoop’. Rest in peace Charlie Brown, say hello to Linus for me up in the sky.”

I didn't know he died. Mental illness is a dreadful disease. May he R.I.P. :(

I'm not sure where I read that the young actor who played on an episode "When the Wind Blows" of 'The Fugitive' was the voice of Charlie Brown, because that actor was Johnny Jensen. I'm looking at IMBD and seeing no record of his voice being used in the 1960's.

Very sad about Peter Robbins. One would think that a person with such a legacy of lending his voice to one of the most iconic cartoon characters would have a decent, upstanding life, but mental illness does happen, and people are talking about it now.

In 1965, a nine-year-old boy gave America its most recognizable sound of childhood vulnerability. Decades later, that same voice lived on in a billion-dollar empire—while the man behind it died alone, consumed by mental illness, isolation, and a life the industry had long since discarded. This is the story of Peter Robbins, and the cost of turning a child into a permanent product.
