Ok, this was in my newspaper this morning, and I swear I thought it wasn't real news. I thought for a minute maybe the editors of my paper had mistaken an "Onion" news story as real news (anyone remember when that happened in China?)

Anyhoo, here's the story:

"WALKING SNAKEHEAD FISH ON THE ATTACK
Washington- Interior Secretary Gale Norton will act today to stop the spread of snakehead--a bizarre, voracious fish with razor-sharp teeth that can walk on land, has attacked people and has been found from Maine to Broward County, Fla.

Norton plans to list 128 species of snakehead fish as an injurious species, the first step in banning them from being inported or moved across state lines.

Native to China, where it is considered a delicacy, the freshwater fish has been found in seven states, said Ken Burton, a spokesman for the Fish and Wildlife Service.

An established colony of bullseye snakeheads was discovered last year in residential lakes and adjoining canals in Tamarac in Broward County, Fla.

Since both juveniles and adults were found, it was clear the fish have been reproducing.

The snakehead has beed depicted as sort of a monster that can live on land for three days. Snakeheads eat other fish, frogs and even ducklings, and can walk on its fins across land to another lake or canal.

Dubbed "Frankenfish," they grow to be as big as a golf bag."

I still find this a quite spectacular and amusing little news item, but my mom assured me it was not fake, that she had heard about them on the news as well.

Anyone else heard about these? Anyone been attacked?

Here's another story about it, short but a bit more in-depth, for those interested: http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2002/07/03/eveningnews/main514182.shtml

And of course, a picture:

I've never heard of a walking fish before! That is so strange. The fish wouldn't actually try to bite people, though, would it?

It's my understanding that they have, though I would assume they've only attacked in the water. If you're on land and can't escape from a FISH, then you better be a small child or disabled in some way, because I should hope most human adults could outrun a fish!
