View Full Version : Guess who Charlotte is referring to here.
80s Dude 01-05-2022, 10:37 PM Does anyone guess who the following quote is referring too?
"According to an Entertainment Weekly article on The Facts of Life there was at one point an anti-gay joke in the script, where one of the male characters was slammed for being effeminate. But Charlotte Rae vetoed the joke, saying "we do not make fun of people's sexuality on this show."
MikeLutton 01-05-2022, 10:41 PM Cousin Geri
80s Dude 01-05-2022, 11:25 PM Not Cousin Geri.
RetroGuy2000 01-05-2022, 11:55 PM I wonder who it was supposed to be. According to the original quote, Charlotte indicated it was a male character wearing tights.

I sure don't recall Cousin Geri wearing tights!

 Nope, Cousin Geri wore the Cerebral Palsy t-shirt... no tights.

80s Dude 01-06-2022, 07:42 AM It was actually Roy.
FOL-FAN-ITA 01-06-2022, 12:25 PM I've always had the impression that it was a male character. Maybe one of the guest stars, maybe one of the girls mates at Langley or George

I have the same thought
It was actually Roy.
Really? But he was in love with Jo

Being effeminate doesn't mean a man is gay, only that some people will easily perceive him as being gay.
But Roy wasn't effeminate, and never wore tights.

No, but he did wear that green uniform jacket.
So, this is so stupid, but in my high school, if you were a boy, you could not wear green on Thursdays. It meant you were gay. A teacher, the wood shop teacher, told us this. Yes, it is completely insane. Yes, it's even more insane that a teacher said this. It was the late 1980s/early 1990s. But apparently, this was a "thing" in the 1800s (https://variety.com/1993/film/reviews/green-on-thursdays-2-1200434946/).
Roy didn't seem gay: he was into Jo. In fact, he even kissed her without her permission. So I'm confused on how this "wearing tights" subplot would have worked. Was it all discarded at Charlotte's request? 80sDude, any info or links are appreciated.

From "The Oral History"

But there's no mention of Roy. How do we know it would have been him being implied he was a "sissy"?
'80sSitcoms 01-06-2022, 06:23 PM Oh, so it may not have been any guy who was even on the screen, like Cindy's father and Nancy's father were spoken of but never appeared on the screen.
Maybe just mention by someone of a boy wearing tights in a Bates play or something or for some artsy performance in Peekskill.

It's just a little "extra", an official explanation from Charlotte
Sitcommania 01-10-2022, 09:46 PM I think it was “We Get Letters” when Andy dressed as a mime. Season 7.

This seems to make the most sense to me.
