Obviously, Rebecca replacing Diane as the female lead but instead of being the Sam and Rebecca show, with Sam constantly trying to woo her like he did with Diane, Cheers became more of an ensemble. Frasier and Lilith were also in a sense, replacements (albeit not as direct like Rebecca for Diane and Woody for Coach) for Diane as they you could say, filled the intellectual but dense role that Diane's character portrayed.
