February 6, 1949 - December 21, 2021 An LA native, Martin attended UCLA where he earned BA and MFA degrees. At UCLA he honed his skills as a writer/editor on the Daily Bruin and as a founder of UCLA-TV. He spent 20 years successfully writing/producing TV comedies, including Three's Company, Three's a Crowd, and Coach.
Martin struggled with addiction, a facet of his life he openly shared with others. He went on to earn a PhD in clinical psychology from Antioch and had a distinguished second career as a therapist in addiction treatment. He is survived by his son Matthew Rips and extended family. A private funeral service was held on Dec. 28.
