I mean, didn't she (https://screenrant.com/golden-girls-sophia-plot-holes/) first come to America from Italy (https://www.reddit.com/r/theGoldenGirls/comments/jbwfpf/angelas_and_sophias_lack_of_an_accent/) (and grew up speaking (https://goldengirls.fandom.com/wiki/Sophia_Petrillo) the Sicilian language) as an adult (https://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/showpost.php?p=5921103&postcount=10)?

Sophia DID have an accent. A New York one, which made no sense. People moving to Brooklyn as adults do not pick up a New York accent.
They say if someone moves to America by about the age of 12 they will lose their foreign accent. That was not the case with Sophia. So yes....she certainly should have had a Sicilian accent.
My grandparents were from Palermo, Sicily. They were young adults when they came to America. Spoke with thick Italian accents till they died in their old age. They also had dark brown eyes, which any Sicilian would have. I loved Estelle Getty.....blue eyes and all. But when you add in her height and her native New Yorker accent, she was physically all wrong to be cast as Dorothy's mother.
